I had hoped the Yanks went for Loretta, but they simply love Miguel Cairo. He was really good a couple of years ago when he batted .292 and came up with a bunch of key hits in '04, but he played terrible last year coming off the bench and batting .239. Pinstripe Alley's friend, Joel Sherman reports:
After flirting with Mark Loretta, the Yankees returned to a comfortable, familiar place to secure their utility infielder, re-signing Miguel Cairo for one year at $750,000.
It is a move sure to be met with general appreciation within the Yankee clubhouse since Cairo is a positive sort who is popular with Joe Torre and his teammates.
This move shows how barren the minor league system is of middle infielders. It does look like Alberto Gonzalez, the kid from Arizona has some promise.
