David Ortiz hit his seventh career walkoff homer after Jonathan Papelbon pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and the Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 in 10 innings Saturday.
With one out and Alex Cora on first with a single, Ortiz hit a 2-2 pitch from Tom Gordon (2-3) into the center-field bleachers and his teammates poured out of the dugout.
We had to get rid of Gordon. He has Armando Benitez disease. Unfortunately, the Yanks couldn't sign B.J. Ryan. He was the pitcher I wanted the Yanks to throw the cash at. I would have given him 44 million for four years in a heartbeat if I'm Cashman, but I'm not sure he was interested in coming to NY. The Mets only problem is Wagner that I can see. Farnsworth was the best of what was left after the Yanks bid farewell to Gordon. The Yankees actually have two good lefties in the pen for a change, but Villone looks to take over the Aaron Small role. Can Kyle get his act together? That's the big question. Control is the thing with him because he has the stuff. The Crystal Ball has been quiet on him so far.
