The Yankees are following what happens with Dontrelle Willis, Livan Hernandez, Kelvim Escobar, Tim Hudson and Jason Schmidt.
According to an Arizona source, the Yankees inquired about Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez before he was dealt to the Mets, but the interest was lukewarm and the Yankees didn't have the major league arm the Diamondbacks wanted in return. They took the struggling Jorge Julio from the Mets.
El Duque could break down at any time. I loved him as a Yankee, but with the broked down staff we have already, I doubted they would have took a flyer on him. Jason Schmidt is a guy I always liked and he's doing pretty well so far his year. The Yanks will never give Florida what they want for Willis.
Pavano may return this year.
Carl Pavano underwent successful arthroscopic surgery yesterday to remove a bone chip from his right elbow and the Yankees believe he will pitch for them later this season. "He can start throwing as early as three weeks from now, so we will be getting him back this year," GM Brian Cashman said.
Raise your hand if you believe that?
