Pavano the savior?

I can't believe I'm writing this, but Carl has to come through or the Yanks will have
big problems:

According to scouts behind home plate, the speed gun readings on the scoreboard were inflated by 4 mph. The scouts' guns had Johnson's fastball from 88 to 91 with an occasional 93 posting. The slider was in the mid-80s. When the pitches were in the strike zone, they were very hittable.

Boston fought over him with the Yanks and lost the bidding war. If Carl doesn't come through, I don't know how they are going to come up with another quality starter to bail out Johnson who can't figure out what to do with his diminished skills. Oh, and why is Joe putting Melky in against Boston? Give him his shot against any other team. Can you figure that one out? Bubba earned the right to play last night.
