The New York Yankees are seeking a package of three young pitchers from the Diamondbacks for Randy Johnson, including at least one reliever, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
The Yankees have expressed interest in right-handed setup man Brandon Medders, the source said, in addition to several of the five starting pitchers the D-Backs consider candidates for the two available spots in their 2007 rotation.
Medders, 26, was 5-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 60 games with the D-Backs last season despite missing the first two weeks with a back injury. Vizcaino, 32, was 4-6 with a 3.58 ERA in his first season with the D-Backs last year and is eligible for arbitration after 2007.
Cashman is on a jag to add younger arms to the mix and if he can pull off this deal it'll help the Yanks out for the immediate future and other possible trade opportunities. If Randy does depart, I'd look for the Yanks to really go after the Rocket now that Zito is off the market. They never would have come close to the amount of cash the Giants gave him. And if they do trade Randy, the Yanks will definitely need at least another starting pitcher.
