They may have dropped three out of four games against the Athletics, but the Yankees started this series against Seattle on a good note last night, winning handily thanks to a grand slam by Mark Teixeira. The Yankees will turn to CC Sabathia tonight, who is looking to bounce back from his last few starts. Sabathia has had consecutive bad outings, the last being against Oakland when he was charged with five runs. In all fairness, it was a quality start heading into the seventh inning, but Sabathia gave up a single and walked a batter, then was pulled from the game. David Carpenter then allowed the inherited runners to score. The last time that CC pitched against the Mariners was April 2014, when he gave up four runs on nine hits through five innings.
Mike Montgomery will make the start for the Mariners. The twenty-five year old lefty will be making his MLB debut tonight after getting the call that he would replace James Paxton who has a strained tendon in one of his left fingers. Montgomery was traded to the Mariners over the offseason from the Rays for Erasmo Ramirez, and he was previously part of the seven-player trade that sent James Shields to the Royals. Montgomery was sporting a 3.74 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 8.0 K/9 down with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate.
The game starts at 10:10 EST, and is the Yankees last 10 pm start until the last week of June when they play the Angels.
