What the Yanks signing of Angel Berroa really means.

The Yanks recent signing of Berroa isn't really big news. The SS and 2B position for the Pinstriped Ones are not in jeopardy. The role as utility IF, though, is shaping up to be an interesting battle. After bringing in Berroa, it looks like the utility job will be held by some combonation of Berroa, Cody Ransom, or Wilson Betemit. This job is of course, the who gets to back up Cano and Jeter battle.

This is where it gets fun. Jeter's defensive struggles at SS are well documented despite the hardware he has collected. In fact, Chone's defensive projections have Jeter pegged as -13 run defender at SS. So, the Yanks signing of Berroa should represent an increase in fielding savvy. It does, to the tune of 4 runs. That's right, Angel Berroa projects as a -9 defender at SS.

It doesn't end there, however, as the Yanks other two options at SS are even worse. Ransom checks in at a pedestrian -12 runs at SS compared to Betemit's impressive -15. So, in summation the Yanks have 4 options to man the SS position (although we know there is really only one), and of the 121 SS that are projected they rank 91st (Berroa), 103rd (Ransom), 107th (Captain), and 113th (Betemit). If you are keeping track, they have 4 of the 25 worst defensive SS in baseball.

I guess the Tex signing didn't illustrate a newfound belief in defense.

EDIT: Betemit is no longer a Yankee, but it's still funny.

Projecting the Pitchers

Yesterday, after the Burrell signing, I took a look at how the position players should project offensively and defensively. We came away with a projection of +31 WAR from the position players alone. Today, I'll take a look at the pitchers and see where that leaves us.

Projecting the Position Players

With the signing of Burrell, we have a fairly good idea about how the at-bats should shake out. I looked at Marcel's projections for the 15 players I see getting the majority of the plate appearances and tried to guess how I thought they might shake out. Then I used their wOBA projections and the CHONE's defensive projections to figure their value.

Age wOBA PA BRAA Replacement Def Adjustment Total Value
Evan Longoria 24 0.366 600 19.3 20.0 7.0 2.5 48.8
Carlos Pena 31 0.383 625 29.3 20.8 1.0 -12.5 38.7
B.J. Upton 25 0.358 600 15.1 20.0 0.0 2.5 37.6
Jason Bartlett 30 0.315 500 -6.1 16.7 7.5 7.0 25.1
Pat Burrell 33 0.369 625 21.7 20.8 0.0 -17.5 25.1
Dioner Navarro 25 0.319 470 -4.1 15.7 2.4 10.4 24.3
Carl Crawford 28 0.335 580 3.0 19.3 8.7 -6.8 24.3
Akinori Iwamura 30 0.330 600 0.5 20.0 0.0 2.7 23.2
Matthew Joyce 25 0.354 400 8.7 13.3 4.7 -6.3 20.4
Reid Brignac 22 0.333 200 0.7 6.7 0.0 2.5 9.9
Fernando Perez 26 0.341 200 2.1 6.7 1.3 -0.8 9.3
Gabe Gross 30 0.335 250 1.3 8.3 1.3 -2.5 8.4
Willy Aybar 26 0.334 200 0.9 6.7 0.0 0.3 7.8
Shawn Riggans 29 0.312 250 -3.7 8.3 -2.5 4.2 6.3
Ben Zobrist 27 0.309 200 -3.5 6.7 -3.3 0.3 0.1

This puts us at about 31 wins above replacement with replacement level pitching. That's about an 80 win team. Tomorrow I'll look at the pitching staff to see where we are as a whole.

Here we mock dumb people:

I'll start:
Wow - he was "outstanding" with Philly last year and he's "still a very good rightfielder" (laughing my butt off over that last quote). - Jimbo, Jimbo, Jimbo - before you walk into your next game, you may want to invest in one of those magazine thingy's in which they call a Gameday Program.

This is a solid signing for the Rays, definitly proof that they ARE trying to win in 2009 but Burrell is surely NOT the right handed power bat we need. Before you ladies fly off the handle in asking why; How about you take into account his 158 K's per 162 games and his below .200 career BA against the American League.

The Rays are hoping and praying this works out, as well as us fans but in reality, this guy will probably struggle to hit .220 for much of the 2009 season.

Look at this dummy.

Bondsian Open Thread

In honor of this news, let's take a look at the 10 "best" seasons by someone age 43 or older (Bonds' age):

Player G Year Age Tm PA wOBA la RAA
Pete Rose 119 1985 44 CIN 500 .341 0.317 10.39
Julio Franco 125 2004 45 ATL 361 .361 0.33 9.60
Julio Franco 103 2003 44 ATL 223 .360 0.328 6.20
Julio Franco 108 2005 46 ATL 265 .351 0.326 5.86
Julio Franco 95 2006 47 NYM 179 .320 0.332 -1.89
Tony Perez 77 1986 44 CIN 228 .310 0.32 -1.93
Julio Franco 55 2007 48 TOT 106 .284 0.331 -4.29
Carlton Fisk 62 1992 44 CHW 214 .290 0.317 -5.04
Sam Rice 97 1934 44 CLE 367 .324 0.342 -5.76
Pete Rose 72 1986 45 CIN 272 .281 0.32 -9.34

Our old buddy Julio Franco is an absolute machine. I am unsure about where I would rank Bonds on my FA DH wishlist. I think it goes something like this: Burrell, Dunn. Bonds, Abreu, Giambi.

Use this thread to discuss whatever you like throughout the weekend.

Does Payroll Have An Effect on Winning?

With all the talk around the baseball world about the Yankees most recent spending spree, I decided to see how winning games in baseball tied to either age or payroll (and how the two related).

Use "wide-view" to see the entire tables.

New Year's Eve Open Thread

This is the first of many off-season open threads. In them we discuss whatever we want: whether it be the latest news and rumors in baseball or Selgy's feelings about the sobriety of the blogosphere. I will normally start it off with an interesting baseball factitude, but in honor of this exciting holiday I'll offer a New Year's Eve themed fun fact:

The famed New Year's Eve in Times Square (pictured below) is a grand tradition most well-known for the large ball that drops to bring in the new year. This tradition began in 1907 and has been carried out every year but 1942 and 1943 (due to wartime lights "dimouts").

So, what does everyone see in the upcoming year for our favorite team? Anyone have any grand plans for the evening?

Add Dodgers to the list of Dunn's suitors

Is this a power-play on Boras and Man-Ram? I'm not happy with more teams entering the Dunn chase, but this may force Manny or the Cubs' hands a bit sooner.

Add Abreu as well. LINK
