Game #143 -- New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Melky Cabrera,  CF
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Jason Giambi,  1B
Robinson Cano,  2B
Wilson Betemit,  SS

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (17-6,  3.68)

Kansas City Royals

Joey Gathright,  LF
David DeJesús,  CF
Ross Gload,  1B
Billy Butler,  DH
Mark Teahan,  RF
Alex Gordon,  3B
Jason Smith,  2B
John Buck,  C
Tony Peña Jr.,  SS

Zack Greinke,  RHP  (6-5,  3.87)

Jeter is out of the lineup today with patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

Last night's victory moved the Yanks to 18 games over .500 for the first time this season.  They still own the best record in MLB since the All-Star break at 37-14.

Wang is undefeated against the Royals despite a bloated ERA (3-0, 4.83 ERA in 5 games).  Greinke has been pounded by the Yanks during his career (1-2, 8.38 ERA in 6 games).

Time to update A-Rod's ridiculous PlayStation-like numbers since Aug 20th:  .413 (26-63), 12 HR, 22 RBI, 20 runs in 18 games.

The featured graphic for today's game is an alternate jersey logo for the Kansas City Royals.

Finally, if you haven't already, check out this piece from the Boston Globe, which is getting a lot of play in the Yankee blogosphere today.  It focuses on Kevin Youkilis as he tries to pinpoint and understand why the Yankees hate him.  Pretty funny stuff if you ask me -- especially when he compares himself to Paul O'Neill.

its because Youkilis is a whining bitch and ugly.

Paul O'Neill?
Paul O'Neill.  Okay, his name should be "you kill us" (with your crazy nonsense).

Why the hell

Utterly unconscious...

Are you kidding me?
Every time I turn on a gameday window, it says "Alex Rodriguez homers to center field."

by SP on Sep 9, 2007 2:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
Don't worry, it will say center field later in this game.

by SP on Sep 9, 2007 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
NO way!  Please stop!!  Save it for October!!!!!!

by BillyBobisdrunk on Sep 9, 2007 2:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow
A-Rod is inhuman.

by PsiFighter37 on Sep 9, 2007 2:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anyone think
A-Rod has a shot at breaking Bonds' single-season record? It's obviously a huge longshot, but if he keeps averaging 1.5 homers per game this month, he'll get there.

by DocBrown82 on Sep 9, 2007 2:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No
won't get to 60

Alex
At the rate he's going, he has a shot to break 61, which would be viewed more legitimately than the juice era records.

ZOMG
Seattle actually has a lead over Detroit!

Get out of the basepath Wang...

good inning.

have a gun for an arm or what?

by bronxbound on Sep 9, 2007 2:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wang has thrown 16 pitches
in 2.0 IP.

Gotta love that.

by anaconda on Sep 9, 2007 2:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

25 in 3 IP
At this rate, he'll have to go the first few innings of Tuesday's game to get his work in.

by chrisNYY on Sep 9, 2007 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow....
25 pitches/19 strikes thru 3.0 IP for Wang.

He must be going for some kind of record for fewest pitches thrown in a 9 inning game.

Jeter
I had a knee problem once (played high school bb and it came back to haunt me in college) and they thought it was patellar tendinitis.  They said it is not a small matter.  It usually takes weeks of rest and doesn't respond to cortisone or other temporary measures.  Usually rest (for a few weeks) is the most minor of treatment with surgery being the most major (if you don't rest it you could be looking at surgery).  I don't like this diagnosis at all.  Maybe times have changed...I hope so.

He'll continue playing
He has to.  He'll worry about any recovery or treatment after the season.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd rest Jeter until
next Friday at Fenway.

It's not going to heal in that short amount of time, but I don't think he should be playing on the turf in Toronto.

It would suck to be without him for a few more games, but Betemit is capable.

by anaconda on Sep 9, 2007 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
he won't stay out of the Boston series but the turf in Toronto would be difficult on him.  Betemit is doing okay.

Well, that sucks
Already in the KC 'pen, so hopefully we can rack up some runs here.

by PsiFighter37 on Sep 9, 2007 3:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Despite the bad inning
Wang has still only thrown 58 pitches thru 5.0 IP.

by anaconda on Sep 9, 2007 3:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Damn
Wang is missing the strike zone a lot now.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 4:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't get
it.  out of all the teams, KC seems to give him a hard time.

That's just how it is
There's always that one team a guy has trouble with,  that one pitcher he can't hit, etc, etc.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Phew
That should be it for Wang.  I'm guessing Farnsworth for the 8th, Mo in the 9th.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 4:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

90 pitches for Wang
Don't see why he can't start the 8th, at the least.

by PsiFighter37 on Sep 9, 2007 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think its
more with he was shaky throughout the game

Wonder
if his back is stiff again.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He seemed to lose
control of his sinker. He replaced that with his slider and he struck out more people after that. When he was in hte dugout Guidry looked to be telling him that he was leaning back and losing balance.

Bale for KC
He's struck out 6 of 8 batters he's gotten out.

Well, nevermind
Farnsworthless is in the house.

he's looking better
thankfully

It's a damn shame
Farnsworth couldn't pitch like from April thru Aug.

True
Better late than never, though.

Maybe it was the constant boos
he heard from the Yankee faithful throughout that time.  It can get in your head as we saw with A-Rod last year and Knoblauch during his time.

It's unfortunate to hear specially when you are at the stadium.  It obviously doesn't help any.

There is nothing you can do about it, however I think it's wrong to get on your own players.

by bronxbound on Sep 9, 2007 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Farnsworth
wasn't booed until he started doing really shitty this year.  also, regarding the topic of booing, fans can do whatever they want.  Some people pay $150 a seat for just one game.  If they want to boo, thats their right.

I agree with you.
I have sat in the championship section many times myself.

Just giving my opinion is all.

by bronxbound on Sep 9, 2007 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because it's their right doesn't make it smart
or right.

If we want our team to win we need to support them.

Fans
can do whatever they want.  These players get paid way too much money for what they do for us to always cheer for them.  The average fan that attends a game spends much more money than they probably should on a baseball game.  If they want to boo or cheer, they can do whatever they want.

Geez
Soria made A-Rod look bad there.

by docgonzo on Sep 9, 2007 4:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I've heard Soria has good stuff
and that his w-l is more about lack of run support than pitching.  I'm not really familiar with him.

Mo to be lights out and not torture me.

I'm getting PTSD from this team.

Hey, Seattle goes home
and if we take 6 of 7, and the Yanks go 3-3, were only 2 and a half back by next Sunday...okay, I'm dreaming, it won't happen

Nah, we already paid the umps
to make sure that won't happen.

Nice, pfisty....
and probably true.

King Felix can't pitch everyday, so I have no idea how SEA is suddenly going to win 6 of 7.

They have only won 3 games the last 2 weeks and all of them were started by King Felix.

And when
he pitches a gem like he did yesterday, that isn't even a definite win the books
