Game #153 -- Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays

Reed Johnson,  RF
Matt Stairs,  1B
Álex Ríos,  CF
Frank Thomas,  DH
Aaron Hill,  2B
Russ Adams,  3B
Gregg Zaun,  C
Adam Lind,  LF
Ray Olmedo,  SS

Roy Halladay,  RHP  (15-7,  3.82)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Robinson Cano,  2B
Doug Mientkiewicz,  1B
Melky Cabrera,  CF

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (18-7,  3.82)

Yanks have won 12 of 14 and have gained 5.5 games on the Red Sox during that span.

How dominant has Roy Halladay been against the Yankees?

His lifetime numbers are 10-4, 3.10 ERA in 25 games.  Ironically, the Yanks haven't beaten him since Sept 21, 2004, which was 3 years ago today.  He's 4-0, 1.90 ERA in his last 7 starts against them since his last defeat.

Wang had been undefeated against the Blue Jays prior to this season (3-0, 2.89 in 4 starts), but he has been shelled in 2 starts against them in 2007 (0-2, 9.90 ERA).

Yankees' career numbers vs. Halladay can be viewed here.  Jays' career numbers vs. Wang can be viewed here.

The featured graphic for tonight's game is an alternate jersey logo of the Toronto Blue Jays from 2001 to 2003.

Update [2007-9-21 17:26:5 by anaconda]:

Ed Price is reporting that Ian Kennedy will be scratched from Saturday’s scheduled start due to a "muscle strain in his upper back."  Well, that sucks.

Since the team had been using a six-man rotation anyways, the others will simply move up a day.

LoHud reports....
that the Giants have told Bonds to take a hike after this season because they are not bringing him back.

http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/2007/09/21/game-153-blue-jays-at-yankees/

I'm hoping the rest of baseball just blackballs him and he is forced to retire instead of hang on as a DH for a couple more years to pad his *stats.

So, no pinstripes for Barry I guess.

If he's cheap enough somebody will probably sign him. It would be nice if Boston did.  I dislike that team anyway.

Most Sux fans hate him too and Schilling despises him so I don't see him going there.  I don't agree with them with very much but we're all on the same page about Bonds.

Not a good inning for Johnny D.
Caught stealing cost a run.  Poor play in the corner.

Nice save by Wang.

Re: Damn....
i think that win over boston on sunday night really deflated them.  they had won 8 of 10 at that point and so had the yanks.

at that point, i think they realized they had given the yanks their best shot and that was it.  especially because they had to go into cleveland.

I'm really surprised DET has fallen apart so quickly.

They had been red hot coming into that series, but I think the Blake walkoff HR in extra innings on Monday has a lot to do with their collapse as anything else.

This is going to be a tough game...I was at the game in July where the Pettitte was behind 2-1 against Halladay, but the Yankees tied it in the 9th and won it in the 10th. Hopefully we can get him out of there sooner rather than later.

Halladay's tendency
We are swinging early in the count, unlike the usual M.O. for the Yankees, so I guess Donnie Baseball and Joe feel like if Halladay gets into a pitchers count, we are not going to get decent pitches to hit.  Risky business.

I find it hilarious that many Red Sox fans suddenly don't care about winning the AL East.  How convenient.  They certainly cared when they were up by 14.5 games.

Re: Wow...
Yeah, Posada is the anti-Jeter.

Bernie was the most frustrating for me, though.  The guy had speed, but zero quickness. Took him forever to get going, which is why he was such an awful base stealer.

Re: Wow...
Yeah, Bernie never had good instincts on the basepaths either.

You don't have to be fast to be a good baserunner.  O'Neill stole 20 bases in his final season and he was never considered a fast runner -- especially with all of the leg/foot/ankle injuries he suffered over the years.

2 runs in 7 IP is hardly a "meltdown."

Should have been 1 run because Posada usually makes that play.

Well, I was being pessimistic. IIRC, there was a stat somewhere that hitters do much, much better with runners on-base against Wang than not.

Marathon
This is not what we needed out of this game.  I hate to say it, but we might have been better off losing in 9 than playing a marathon.

Now that we're here though, and we've spent all of these resources, we really need to win this one.

Re: Marathon
It makes obvious sense to anyone with half a brain. In the hypothetical, the team might have been better off losing a 9-inning game than winning what may amount to a 14, 15, 16...-inning game.  We have a playoff spot pretty much wrapped up and we have guys who need rest.

The comparison is one of a hypothetical vs. reality.  Would you rather tap all of your resources and win, say, a 16-inning game, or lose one game and save your resources?

Struck out the side. Doesn't really matter when he gives up a bomb, though.

How's the ump?
Gamecast is showing these so-called strikes as way low.

I think it's safe to say
that Bruney will not be on the playoff roster.

Re: Game #153 -- Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yan
Someone hit a damn HR, please. If you're going to play this late, play as long as you damn well want.

Re: Game #153 -- Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yan
Well, down to our last batter. This is like that game earlier in the season - Shelley hit a HR to tie in the 9th, but lost in extra innings. At least Mo had the courtesy to blow the lead right away instead of dragging it out and killing the bullpen.

Re: Game #153 -- Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yan
Fuck. What a fucking waste of time.

The ump seemed to be calling a shitload of low strikes on GameCast at the end.

Low Pitch
the second strike was a good pitch. The last one was way low...tough loss
