Call It What It Is

It's great.

31 runs scored in the last three days.
Phil Franchise struggled, but Wang and Moose looked good.
Hideki Matsui belted his 100 homer as a Yankee.

Wasn't there another big milestone this weekend?  I can't remember...

The important thing is that the Yankees are only one game back in the loss column from the Wild Card lead.  Over the weekend we picked up a game on Boston, 2 games on Seattle, 3 games on Detroit, and 2 games on the Indians.

My thoughts from my seat in Yankee Stadium today included:

  • Man, it's hard to get to the Stadium on time when you bring a girl along.
  • I love it when the team scores runs on a walk-single-walk-single-walk-single rally, if for no other reason than it shuts up the "this team just waits for the 3 run homer" belly achers.  I also think it's a good way to remind people how much more important OBP is than SLG.
  • Oh look!  Mike Myers can't get out lefties.  At all.  Seriously, allowing 3 runs when he's given a 6 run lead is inexcusable.
  • Next stop Toronto.

Pettitte, Rocket, Wang against Litsch (1.48 WHIP), Towers (5.2 IP/ GS), and Halladay (with an very unHalladay-like grounder: fly ball ration of 1.89- he's been over 2.3 in 5 of the last 6 seasons).

Meanwhile, Boston goes to Anaheim, Seattle takes on Baltimore, Detroit welcomes Tampa Bay, and Cleveland goes to Chicago.

I had said this would be a big weekend, and the Yankees delivered.  If they can continue to play well in the coming week, we can have our name at the top of the Wild Card leaderboard.

    Extremely Impressed
Let me just say that the Yanks have been extremely impressive, especially offensively, and certainly much better than many of us (* cough, cough *) would have thought at this point in the season given the first half performance.  That said, August is going involve a much more challenging schedule than the last few weeks what with th Yankees playing all the current AL division and WC leaders. What are the chances that the Yanks make it through that schedule with the WC in hand?  And what trades do you wish the FO had made to help the team do it?  I for one am somewhat hoping the Yanks get the WC as a post-season without a Yankees/Red Sox series is like...(fill in the blank.)  It ain't October baseball is all I'm sayin'.

    Hey B Cap...
The Empire is well aware that the ring goes through Boston.  But we did what we had to do in July...get back in the race against the weaker teams.  But this is not the same team you saw in April and May.  Do you want me to give the details or will it give you nightmares?  We still have some scores to settle.
When asked what he thought of Canseco being the first to do 40/40, Mickey Mantle replied "Hell if I knew that y'all would make such a fuss, I'd 'a done it!"

    the ring goes
through Boston?  I'm sure last year before the playoffs started everyone was saying the ring goes through St. Louis.  Boston is good, but hey are far from automatic in a short series (just like almost every other team these days)

    Wild card - bah
Hey Boston! Don't look back, Something (pinstripped) might be gaining on you. (Tipping my hat to Satchel Paige)

There are nearly two months of baseball left.  I do not concede the East to the BoSox.

They look pretty solid for the wild card though.

    Solid for the wild card?
I hope you are right.  They have had one of the easiest schedules for the past month though.  The next 3 weeks will tell alot.

    Hey, I'm
trying to be realistic. There have been too many times this season when you think the Yanks have turned the page.  There schedule has been easy and they have done what they should do with an easy schedule.  I would be happy as long as the Yanks are in.  As we know, anything can happen then.
