Game #133 -- Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston Red Sox

Julio Lugo,  CF
Dustin Pedroia,  2B
David Ortiz,  DH
Mike Lowell,  3B
Kevin Youkilis,  1B
J.D. Drew,  RF
Jason Varitek,  C
Coco Crisp,  CF
Eric Hinske,  LF

Josh Beckett,  RHP  (16-5,  3.21)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Jason Giambi,  1B
Robinson Cano,  2B
Melky Cabrera,  CF

Roger Clemens,  RHP  (5-5,  4.34)

No surprise at all, but the Yanks catch a break with Manny Ramirez out of the lineup as a result of his recurring back spasms.  I'm sure his .180 (9-50) career average against Clemens probably made the decision to sit him a lot easier.

Clemens has pretty good career numbers against the Red Sox (8-5, 3.85 ERA in 19 starts).  He has pitched very well (3-1, 2.79 ERA in 7 starts) at Yankee Stadium this season but not so well on the road (2-4, 5.93 ERA in 8 starts).

Despite his record, Beckett has been pounded by the Yanks during his Red Sox career (3-2, 7.91 ERA in 6 starts).  He is 1-0, 5.54 ERA in 2 starts against the Yanks in 2007.

Yanks are 13-2 in games where Johnny Damon starts in LF.

The featured graphic for tonight's game is the official mascot of the Boston Red Sox bullpen.

Prediction:
This is gonna make the tight LAA and DET games look like massage therapy.

Rocket goes 6, gives up 3 ER. Beckett goes 7 gives up 2 ER. Game is knotted in the late innings (dare I say by Damon?), and the Yankees finally pull out an extra inning game.

LAA is up against King Felix early
2-1, Top 3rd

Of course, another Weaver is on the mound so a collapse is never out of the question.

This Weaver
is the one you want to have.

Looks like there is a 180 degree reversal
on the prospects of Kennedy in the rotation throughout Sept if he pitches well.

Here's what LoHud says:

"Just got out of the clubhouse, where Brian Cashman was entertaining questions. Here's an overview:

Why Kennedy: "He was pitching the best at the time."

Innings cap for Kennedy: "No, he's below it. He had a heavy workload with USC and USA Baseball."

So Kennedy could pitch every five days through the end of the season? "Yes."

by Greenfuzz on Aug 29, 2007 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting piece of research
by Petey A. over at LoHud:

UPDATE, 7:11 p.m.: Just did a little research into Ian Kennedy's workload. You may find this interesting:

  1. 117 innings at USC, 28 innings with Team USA for a total of 145
  2. 101.1 innings at USC, 2.2 with Staten Island and 30.1 in the Hawaii Winter League for a total of 134.1
  3. 146.1 in the minors.
Cashman won't say what his limit is. But based on how they've developed other players, it's around 175 or 180. So the Yankees can use him as a starter for a month without any issues.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Aug 29, 2007 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

Which begs the questions....
Why were they giving Kennedy extra days off and limiting his innings the last few weeks if he is well under the cap for the season?

Also, why didn't Kennedy get the start a couple of weeks ago instead of Karstens -- unless this is a move simply out of desperation because of Moose's collapse.

# of sox runs scored in becketts wins this season
11, 6, 9, 10, 15, 4, 4, 10, 4, 9, 6, 5, 7, 7, 14, 7 = 8 runs per win.

I'd be curious to see the disparity
in the pitching match-ups between Dice-K and Beckett this season.

It seems like they score a lot of runs for Beckett, but Dice-K hasn't gotten nearly the same kind of run support.

Also, the BoSox are just 14-13 in games he has pitched.

Big insurance run. Excellent.
But, was that really curtain call worthy?  I mean, it used to be a special thing when the fans would demand a player to come out for a bow. Now it's becoming routine, which strips it of its original value and importance.

Same thing is happening in NCAA bball with rushing the court after every win against a half-decent squad.

Maybe
But we NEED to stage him for 2 appearances against Seatle at the start of next week.

We are getting to the end of our difficult part of the schedule.

The Joba rules
are that he needs days off equal to IP before and after he pitches.  So if he's going to throw two innings he needs to have rested 2 days before and then be unavailable for two days after.

Didn't realize
it was two days either side of the pitch day.  that really straps us.  Tomorrow's game is kinda worth two in the East race: we'll either be down 5 or 7 at game's end.

How sweet would it be if we rock Gagne tomorrow. I'll bet Tito doesn't use him.

Oh those bases on balls. Can anyone here throw strikes???
