So that went well.  Actually, it went better than I'd imagined it could after the disaster that is Mike Mussina started game 1.  Joba and Edwar could be the keys to our season with 6 weeks to play.

Even Farnsworth decided to contribute.

But as they say: "Don't look back.  You can never look back."

The boys play in Anaheim tomorrow (which is near LA, I saw it on the map.

Phil Franchise leads off against Dustin Moseley (1.40 WHIP).
Our own version of Dustin Moseley (Mike Mussina) follows against the very good Kelvim Escobar (1.19 WHIP).
Andy Pettitte closes it out against John Lackey (1.28 WHIP).

Rockin'.

Update [2007-8-19 22:47:32 by jscape2000]:

I was just looking at the standings, and I realized something:

If the Yankees win the series against the Angels they can guarantee that they will be in first place in the wild card. The Mariners are only one game back of the Angels, and if the M's win their games, they'll be in first place in the AL West with the Angels chasing the Yankees. If they lose their games, they'll be that much farther back.

So after 124 games, it's that simple. All we have to do is beat the Angels and we'll be in the driver's seat on the way to the playoffs.

Monday and Wednesday will be good games.  Tuesday I will probably be able to go to sleep at 11pm.

Gonna be a tough week
I'd be shocked if they don't lose some ground in the AL East race -- probably 2 games or so.

Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic considering the stark contrast in the upcoming competition....

NYY:  at LAA, at DET

BOS:  at TB, at ChiSox

SEA should be in pretty good shape as well because they are at MIN (and will miss Santana) and TEX this week.

Too bad BoSox don't play KC
For some reason, the Royals always seem to give them trouble.

by PsiFighter37 on Aug 19, 2007 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm hoping TB can revert back to 2006 form
because the Red Sox only won the season series 10-9 last year.

I also know that Kazmir has always given them fits and he's on the hill against Wakefield tomorrow night.

by anaconda on Aug 19, 2007 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Kazmir
will hold them for 7 innings, its just that awful TB bullpen.

Just looked up his numbers....
Kazmir is 5-3, 2.37 ERA in 14 starts against the Red Sox.

But, as you suggested, the pen always lets him down.

by anaconda on Aug 19, 2007 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Still can't believe...
...that the Mets traded Kazmir for Victor Zambrano.

by PsiFighter37 on Aug 19, 2007 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

speaking of..
zambrano just threw for the indianapolis indians last week, the pirates triple-A affiliate.

just in case you were wondering "where are they now?"

Wakefield
Hopefully without Mirabelli catching for him it gives him fits.  Plus maybe the Yanks get lucky and Varitek twists a knee diving after a knuckle ball.

Gotta agree
I don't like those Angels' matchups at all. Hopefully Seattle cools off here soon. I guess now we want Cleveland to sweep Detroit too.

Not sure why you'd think that
Phil and Andy can't handle the Angels (sorry Moose)--plus I'll be at Wednesday's game and they always win when I go.

schedule
2 of 3 from the angels is important if we don't want to lose ground in the AL East or the WC.

this year
the problem with this year is that it's the "you never know" ballclub.  You never know who is going to take the field on any given day.  It's tough to look at matchups and go "oh yeah, we win this one" because we've turned in so many head-scratching performances this year.  We'll be red hot and then go dismal or be dismal for a stretch and all of a sudden it comes alive.  This team has the makings of greatness which we see when we have double digit run games and then they seem to send in understudies the next game.  Or we write off someone and they turn in an unbelievable perfomance the next game (see Farnsworth, Kyle or Abreu, Bobby). It's the "damned if I know" team of 2007.

I only hope that the boys can throw off any residual Angel dust of seasons past and turn in good performances by pitching and bats.   I know they have it in them to do it it just depends on who takes the field.

the "you never know" ballclub..
i totally agree, but i actually think its a nice thing to be a "you never know" ballclub as far as the matchups go.  its great to actually have a solid bench because the yanks can turn in so many different lineups and mix it up/give the regs some rest with someone other than cairo.

you are right that some of the hot/cold streaks have been frustrating...but i feel like those might be over.  the way the team responded taking 3 straight in a critical series with detroit after dropping 3 straight shows that they are going to be in it for the long haul.

i like the "angel dust" reference as well.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Aug 20, 2007 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, all we have to do....
is beat the Angels.  Ugh!  I'm not gonna say it, but you all know what I'm thinking.

BTW, three cheers for Cashman if he really did impose some kind of restrictions on Chamberlain's use.  I have little doubt that Torre really might've burned this kid out... especially with the Proctologist being gone.

by JTC111 on Aug 20, 2007 2:27 AM EDT reply actions

just gotta believe
that there are bounce backs from everything...

the Angels have been insane at home while the Yankees have been poor on the road, time for both of these to bounce back to norm... Mussina strung quiet a few good outtings before last one.. so he's due for some bounce back.. but will probably need Escobar returning down to earth a bit to catch up  . and Pettitte vs Lackey is just a toss up.

I just pray the recent trends of both team's bullpen holds true down thre :P

by RollingWave on Aug 20, 2007 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

I hope so
about Moose but I doubt it. His good outing were against bad hitting teams. Not that the LAA is a great hitting team, but Escobar is good.

I didn't know where else to post this:
BIG NEWS from AAA:

Former Yankees and Phillies and current [Syracuse] Chiefs catcher Sal Fasano stole second base in the top of the seventh against Brian Bruney and catcher Wil Nieves. It was Fasano's first stolen base since playing for Salt Lake in 2002 and just his second swipe of the millennium.

I still love Sal.

sal
i want to see a highlight of it. Nieves probably could have run from home plate to 2nd base to tag out Fasano.

Jaba Chamberlain Nickname?
John Sterling had a great nickname he postulated on yesterday's broadcast (Aug. 19, 2007) for Jaba. Sterling dubbed him, the "Pocket Rocket."

Similar to NHL Canadiens' former great Maurice the "Rocket" Richard and his younger brother, Henri "Pocket Rocket" Richard.

It acknowledges the close relationship between Clemens and Chamberlain

by Petunia on Aug 20, 2007 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Its Joba, not Jaba.
Also, I'm sure that Clemens and Joba have a real close relationship since they have known each other for about 10 days.

I can't believe he's signed until 2011.
