Game #67 -- New York Mets at New York Yankees

New York Mets

Jose Reyes,  SS
Paul Lo Duca,  C
Carlos Beltran,  CF
David Wright,  3B
Carlos Delgado,  1B
Jose Valentin,  DH
Shawn Green,  RF
Ruben Gotay,  2B
Carlos Gomez,  LF

Orlando Hernandez,  RHP  (3-2,  2.38)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  DH
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Jorge Posada,  C
Hideki Matsui,  LF
Robinson Cano,  2B
Melky Cabrera,  CF
Miguel Cairo,  1B

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (6-4,  3.49)

Chien-Ming Wang is making his first career start against the Mets tonight and has been nothing less than outstanding in his last 6 starts (5-1, 2.30).  El Duque has pitched extremely well this season in his own right, but has encountered some bad luck against the Yankees (0-3, 4.26 in 3 starts) during his career.

It almost doesn't seem fair that the Yanks play the Mets this weekend while the Red Sox played and swept the dismal San Francisco Giants.  Never fear, folks.  The odds will even out a bit this week with the Yankees facing the Rockies and Giants while the Red Sox travel cross-country to play the Braves and Padres.

Both Seattle and Oakland have already lost today, so it would be really sweet to take 2 of the 3 games this weekend against the Mets and gain some ground on two teams they are chasing in the Wildcard standings at the same time.

The featured graphic for today's game is the primary cap logo for the New York Mets.

Come on Yankees, let's take the series!

Yawn
Nothing too exciting on Baseball Tonight right now.

by PsiFighter37 on Jun 17, 2007 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Go Yankees...
...let's start off this game with a bang.  And by bang, I mean some hits.  And by some hits, I mean a grand slam in the first.  Is that too much to ask?

by skwire on Jun 17, 2007 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

No....
that's not too much to ask.

:O and Happy Father's Day to you all dads in the Yankeesland!

Let's go Yankees!

Go Wang!

Thanks...

Only thing that sucks...
...is that I have to watch Joe Morgan on TV.

by PsiFighter37 on Jun 17, 2007 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

I think
it would be huge after loosing the 1st game of this series to end up winning the last 2 and taking the series.

by AKJoe on Jun 17, 2007 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Ha!
Good.

I'll just have to settle with a no-hitter instead of a perfect game then.

by CharlieBrown on Jun 17, 2007 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll hold my hands up....
I'll hold my hands up....

I never thought Chien-Ming would be as successful as he is. In his short career, he's proven to be a good fit for the Yankees.

Really happy for him because I was born in Hong Kong.

by CharlieBrown on Jun 17, 2007 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

Indeed
I think most people expected a regression because of his astoundingly low k rate but it hasn't happened yet.

If he keeps it up, he'll only throw 45 pitches tonight!

How..
How cool would that be!!!

by CharlieBrown on Jun 17, 2007 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

El Duque...
...I enjoy watching him pitch.  We still have to beat him, of course.  =]

by skwire on Jun 17, 2007 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

Beltran
It's a good thing he's not on the Yankees with the way he's playing right now, because he'd be getting booed worse than ARod ever was.

by SP on Jun 17, 2007 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

Ended up being a good non-signing
At first, I thought the Yanks were stupid for passing on him, but in hindsight, it's not so bad. Definitely not worth the money he's getting paid, and he doesn't hit for average, either.

by PsiFighter37 on Jun 17, 2007 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree
They could have had him for 7 years, 96M. That is a steal considering what Damon and Wells got.

I personally think he got sick of Pujols being universally regarded as the best player in baseball and just decided to take his crown back. He has been punishing pitches all season long.

For someone so quick to pull his starters, I'm bafffled that Torre is leaving Wang in the game. 105 pitches is a lot (and as I say this, Beltran singles home a run). Should've started fresh with Bruney (especially given the off day). Oh well.

Preview looks interesting enough
I only wish I had been alive back when the Bronx Zoo was around. Looks fascinating.

Great game
I'd love to read the bronx is burning, I was alive then but I was so young I don't remember things in a defined way.  Except we were all afraid of the son of sam.  But I was like 7 and 8 so I'd like to really read about it from an adults point of view.

Re: Bronx is burning ...
Great book.  It was interesting to talk with my grandparents and parents about that summer after reading the book.

great game great book
the game was PHENOMENOL.  It's been such a terrific weekend at the Stadium (gettin up in the am is going to suck.

I bought The Bronx is Burning when it first came out in hard cover.  Since then it's been given to me THREE TIMES as a gift.  I donated the extras to the NYPL...it is a great book.

I was alive then and remember the year, it was just so WTF is going on in this city...the Bronx in particular...but the Yankees were saviors.

just talked to Cbeck and Jscape on the cell phone, they are looking at a 4am ETA....

For a game like that its worth it, don't you think?

But it was worth it.  Great crowd at the stadium.  Nice to take a series going into a travel day.
I like this winning thing; shall we do it again on Tuesday?

I watched Reggie
hit the 3HR's..it was on three pitches from three different pitchers I believe...I have to read that book. I lived through the Son of Sam too..,,I'm getting old...There had been a rumor floating that he drove a yellow VW. A bunch of us were drinking beers in an alley and suddenly...a yellow VW creeps down the road...There was a lot of hot heads saying they were out looking for him, but we were all scared until it passed us by...

Way a crappy way to wake up
After such a great win, somebody please tell me that I didn't just read that the Yanks are interested in trading for Shea Hillenbrand.

True
It is just that their previous, inexplicable interest in him from this past winter has me worried. If that trade happens, Phelps may slit his wrists.

The part that really sucks
is that Carlos Pena has 16 bombs for the Devil Rays. Who was that genius who advocated the Yanks giving him a real shot all year last year?

Best Part..
..of last nights game when Reyes hit into the double play. Second best part was when Jorge threw out Reyes trying to steal second by about two feet. Reyes v Jeter?? I'll take Jeter.

by BobbyNYC on Jun 18, 2007 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

True
but there is also something to be said for having one of the best starts to a career in history. Reyes is good and plays a premium position but to compare him to Pujols is a fucking joke. Reyes is nowhere near as valuable and good as Pujols.

Thankfully
We have the ability to compare Reyes and Pujols.
Pujols: VORP- 23.9 WARP3- 9.5 EqA- .327
Reyes:  VORP- 32.1 WARP3- 9.4 EqA- .312

For Comparision
Jeter:  VORP- 30.1 WARP3- 10.3 EqA- .316
Arod:   VORP- 45.5 WARP3- 11.9 EqA- .359
Posada: VORP- 32.3 WARP3- 7.6  EqA- .333

I assume that is only for this year
wherein Pujols has been slumping and Reyes has greatly excelled.

by pfistyunc on Jun 18, 2007 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

the stats
have to be from this year, but Reyes isn't hitting as well as he did last year.  So he isn't doing more than he has before.

by ReLaunch on Jun 18, 2007 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?
Reyes OPS is higher this year and his OBP is almost 50 points higher, making his deadliest weapon which is his speed that much more effective. His power and RBI's are down though. Pujols' OPS is down to. By down, I mean under 1.000!

I don't think
its a joke to compare Pujlos and Reyes.  They are boh awesome, but remember, Reyes will continue to get better.  He also can change a game in many different ways.
Pride, Power, Wildcard?

Yep...
Non-Yankees, Pujols and Reyes are easily the top two.

And Johan would be the top pitcher (pointing out the obvious, sorry)

I'd put
Miggy and Sizemore ahead of Reyes too.

by pfistyunc on Jun 18, 2007 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Miggy
Yes, on talent, Miggy is up there. But to quote some Fish fans I met, 'Miggy is a bit lazy'.

Sizmore I'd agree he belongs right up there along with Reyes. Sizemore, Crawford and a younger Vlad (though he's STILL awsome).

by CharlieBrown on Jun 18, 2007 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

While we are here....
Let's throw in Chase Utley as well.

But make no mistake, Pujols is still No.1

by CharlieBrown on Jun 18, 2007 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

True
Miggy's weight gain can lead him to fall down on this list, but on talent alone is in the top 3 in baseball.

Best plays of the night.
Best plays of the night:  Every Yankees hit and every single home run, plus Wang's performance from the first pitch to the last (It's ALL good for me, I'm easy to please).

Second best plays:  Reyes' double play, his being picked off by a pitch-out, and his striking out in the 8th or 9th.  Jeter is still The Man.  Reyes has a long, long, long way to go before he can be compared with Jeter.

Excellent game for the Yankees.  Excellent, indeed.

Jon Miller, please get another job
Last night game was perfect -- well, almost perfect, except for Jon...Miller.

Jon Miller is HORRIBLE!!!  I hate the way...he speaks...with his constant...pausing...and hesitations...  He's got his little anti-Yankee digs that he keeps repeating and repeating and repeating again and again and again...(can you believe he brought up A-Rod's "ha" once AGAIN?)  He's obviously not a Yankees fan and doesn't have a clue about factual reporting when it comes to the Yankees.  Thank God Joe Morgan is there is set the record straight when it comes to the facts.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 18, 2007 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

To explain...
When I'm watching the game I really don't pay a whole lot of attention to the commentators, until I hear something that irks me. It's ALWAYS Jon Miller saying something idiotic and Joe puts him in his place right afterwards. I'm not vouching for everything Joe says. It's just that he always seems to have a good response to Miller's nonsensical comments. Miller's slow speech pattern wouldn't bother me very much if he didn't repeat the same garbage over and over and over again. How many more times do we have to hear about A-Rod's "ha"? Enough is enough. Miller, needs to get another job -- or retire if he's that old.

by Lucy on Jun 18, 2007 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller is fine
Morgan's an idiot - he can never get player's names right, even stars, which makes him a complete shithead in my opinion.  As for Miller, I like him - his voice has a nice pitch and he offers some genuine excitement at the right moments (He gave a hearty "Wow!" when A-Rod hit no. 27).  Any pauses or hesitations, I think, are brought on by his advanced age.  I'll forgive him for being old.

by docgonzo on Jun 18, 2007 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

And how many more times...
How many more times can Miller repeat that Jeter can beat Rose's record "if he stays healthy"? That's a given, so to repeat it over and over and over again didn't sit well with me. We will always assume good health for Jeter and all our players. To suggest otherwise, and repeatedly at that, is shameful.
