Jason Giambi out indefinitely

The news just keeps getting better in Yankeeland.

LoHud:

Jason Giambi was seen by foot and ankle specialist Dr. William Hamilton today and found to have a tear of the plantar fascia. That is the tissue that connects the heel to the base of the toes.

He will go on the disabled list today. Giambi was given a walking boot to immobilize the area and will be evaluated again in three weeks.

No word as of yet who will be called up to replace Giambi on the roster.

This means lots more of Johnny Damon as the DH and Melky Cabrera in center field.

Neither is impressive
I saw them playing recently, and frankly, they are nothing to get excited about. If we're ready to fold it up, sure bring 'em up. But if we think we still have a shot (and I think we do), we should be looking at more productive options.

What other options are there?
Nothing at 1B.  We could use a righthanded bat in that lineup, so Shelley may help.  I know Thompson will probably come up, but he won't play.  I'd rather give a shot to someone who will play.  It worked out a few years back when they called Cano up.

I know I said Thompson
And I think that option will win, since he's already on the 40-man.

But there's no reason Andy Phillips can't handle left or right. And he's been playing the infield at Scranton. If they can get him on the 40-man, he's another option.

BTW,
Congrats to you and your River Ave buds for the Law interview.

I wished I had more access to do such interviews.

It actually stemmed from Mike insulting Keith Law like 7 months ago. They developed a rapport, and now we get access like this.

Kinda cool, I gotta say. We're working on more bits like that.

That's interesting...

If we keep one of our firstbaseman
I want to keep Mientkiewicz.  He was supposed to be good on D.  But, to me he has been a revelation.  His offensive production will probably move back to career numbers.

Phelps hurts us out there as much, or more than Jason did.  His bat is not that good.  He can't play in NY.

I didn't say Phelps couldn't hit.
I said his glove is so bad his bat is so bad he shouldn't be used in the field.

There is a reason phelps was available for rule 5. He reminds me of the old joke about Marv Thrownberry, "What does Marv have in common with Michael Jackson?

They both wear a glove on their right hand, for no apparent reason."

Truth is
I don't think Doug M. can play in NY either.  He is a stopgap.

I think that defense first is a better choice in a stop gap.

To play first full time for the Yanks you need a big bat.  That's an offensive position.  I do not believe Phelps has any real chance to be the starter.  If the position was solid he might do as a backup.

The Trade that will work
is to send Farnsworth to Atlanta, where he had great success, and has max value for rookie catcher first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  Then we can platoon Posada and Salty, great nickname, at catcher AND FIRST.  Posada needs to move there anyway and this would be a great trade for everybody.  Atlanta doesn't need him as they already have McCann.  The Yanks would be set at catcher and first base for the next 5 years!

And Farnsworth has failed miserably
in that role.

Why on Earth would the Braves be stupid enough to make this deal?

The see all the same stats that we do and they know Farnsworth can't retire the side in order to save his life.

Keep in mind that the Braves also had Leo Mazzone back then and he performed a lot of minor miracles with struggling pitchers.

If not Farnsworth
then you find another player.  Salty is worth it and would fit perfectly.  And he's available
"In Atlanta, multitalented rookie catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has started taking ground balls at first base as the Braves try to figure out his future with the trading deadline approaching. "We have our franchise catcher [Brian McCann]," GM John Schuerholz said. "So who knows what will happen? We could find another place for Salty to play. Or somebody else could want him and make us an offer where we say to ourselves, 'This is a deal that makes sense for us and for him and for everybody.'"

Okay, listen
He's young. He plays a premium position. He's property of his team for six years.

This all means that it will take a lot to get him. Probably a young pitcher, which for the Yankees would mean Joba or Kennedy. They should not be parting with either of them.

What a waste.
I like Jason, but this the 4th season in a row that he's missed significant time. It's hard not to look at his tenure w/ the Yankees as a bust.

I don't quite get the sense of the suggested trade.

I don't think the Yankees can change what they're doing at 1st and catcher because the DH went down. For now they've got bring up an OF and annoint Johnny DH.

I don't want Cash making stupid trades in attempt to get into a playoff race they're not in, but I'd rather the Yankees have as healthy a team as possible.

I'm more worried about Roger talking Cash into a stupid trade, then Cash making a stupid trade due to Giambi's injury.

You're right
I forgot that he would be coming back so close to the end of the AAA season anyway, so I guess it is a wash. My fear is that he comes back and the Yanks are five games or so out of the wild card and then they ride him too hard in a playoff push. At least if he stayed away until September that would be less likely to happen. Granted, I don't think the Yanks will be that close in August so it probably won't matter.

In some ways
This makes the Yanks a better team.

It was nice of Giambi to try and play through it, but he was pretty useless the past month or so (like everyone not named Jeter or Posada).

Melky is a better hitter than what he's shown so far this year, and his defense in center is light years better than Damon's.  If he gets his bat going a little bit his energy can jump start the team - like it did last year.
