The Yanks hope to avoid the sweep tonight (Sadly, I've been writing that a lot lately) in a match-up of 22-yr old rookies.  Both were outstanding in their ML-debuts earlier this month.

These young hurlers were born just over three weeks apart in early 1985 -- which was roughly 9-10 months after Roger Clemens made his ML-debut for the Boston Red Sox on 5/15/84.

Changing gears, I don't know how fan blogs of the Cubs, D-Rays, Royals, and Pirates can stomach their respective teams on a game-by-game basis.  Consistently writing about how and why their team lost yet again the previous night has got to be especially nauseating when your team loses 100+ games every year with no light at the end of the tunnel.  Kudos to them.

I've only been doing this stuff for 50+ games and I'm already getting tired of it.  I suppose I'm a primary example of a spoiled Yankee fan during the Joe Torre era.  Nobody in MLB is going to feel sorry for us because this team is on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time since 1993.

Okay, I'm done venting.  For now.

The featured graphic for tonight's game is the BP cap logo for the Toronto Blue Jays used primarily in 1999.  Not sure why they thought the red cap was a good look for them since they had donned nothing but the blues and grays since their inaugural season of 1977.

Shaking up the Lineup
I am glad to see Torre playing Phelps he has been riding the pine a lot lately.  Now i am just waiting for some position players to get called up from AAA to give this team some life.  Whenever i see the Yankees on tv they look so bored and defeated, they play a kids game for a living they should be happy as hell.

by snapper69 on May 30, 2007 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

Who?
What young AAA players can play at the major league level?

I've been advocating Eric Duncan, but that's just based on his last 10 or so games. He easily couldn't be ready.

Other than that, the hitters at AAA either aren't good or aren't young.

It's legal
but it is also pretty bush league. Once it was 10-5, I am stunned that Minky didn't catch one in the ribs. Hell, with Gibbons as the manager I am surprised he didn't fight A-Rod himself.

by garp on May 30, 2007 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is
it bush league?  no one says it is bush league when a 1st baseman hides the ball in his glove, then tags the runner when the runner thinks the pitcher has it.  (yes, I know its a run on but its too late for me to reword that).
Pride, Power, Tailgating

by ReLaunch on May 30, 2007 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly bush league
Any time you do something like that and several players who have been around the game a long, long time all say that they have never seen it before and become infuriated is generally an indication that what you did was bush league.

The fact that none of his teammates or his manager backed him up or said "that happens all the time" also speaks volumes.

I think its still funny.  I could see if I was a fan of the opponent or the other team, how it could piss them off.  I still can't stop laughing.
Pride, Power, Tailgating

by ReLaunch on May 31, 2007 8:06 AM EDT up reply actions

this isn't backing him up, but it isn't
disagreeing with him either

The Yankees didn't quite know what to think.

"I wasn't sure that was allowed," outfielder Johnny Damon said. "If it is, maybe we'll keep on doing it."

Said manager Joe Torre: "I don't know what to feel for it. It's not like he said, 'I got it.'"

Also, the play I mentioned above (hiding the ball), why is that not considered bush league then?

Pride, Power, Tailgating

by ReLaunch on May 31, 2007 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Read between the lines
That ain't direct criticism but they are going out of their way not to support what he did. I think it is pretty easy to figure out what they thought of it.

As for hiding the ball, I think that is not bush league because it is so common.

Fear the Evil Empire

by pfistyunc on May 31, 2007 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions

While it may be frowned upon
it's not illegal.  Regardless of whether it's bush league or not, the guy playing 3rd is a professional baseball player who plays in front of 30,000-40,000 screaming fans every night.  What happened is no reason for him to not make the catch.  You don't know your own teammates voice?

But
the guy playing third has been around for 16 years.  He has had to play with John Mcdonald before.  But even still he should have made that catch, it was his ball.  And he should have the mental stability to concentrate on catching that ball.

Agreed
I understand that they're not happy and will seek retribution with Arod when we meet again.  That's fine.  However, I think blaming Arod for not catching that ball is pretty freaking lame.
