Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

The worst Yankee signings, trades, etc.

All this talk about Cashman got me thinking. Who were the all-time Yankee clunkers. I'm talking the worst of the worst. We've got to dig deep fellas to pull out the stankiest signings, trades, etc. ever brought forth in Yankeeland.

Mine was Ken Phelps, partly because we gave up Buhner and partly because Phelps backed into my car one night after the game and tried to deny it. During the altercation, my buddy got frustrated with Phelps' denial, and blurted, "Hey, while you're at it, try denying you're 2-30 with two errors!"

Let's get the worst of the worst!

Pavano
it deff has to be pavano. i think hes one of the biggest busts in the history of baseball.  the guy gets 10 mil to sit on a bench and drive porsches around.  im a young pup though so mabye i dont know of any terrible older signings

No one in the last 20
years touches Pavano.  At leat the other players played (although not well).  Pavano is the ultimate pussy.

look at his numbers.  He doesn't belong on this list.  He was just a disappointment.  He was good enough to belong in the big leagues.

Glenallen Hill and Jose Canseco
At the same time, no less.  Just so they could pack the bench with stiffs.

Are you fucking joking?
Hill raked for the Yanks. Sixteen homers in 132 at bats. We traded for him mid-season, got plenty of use out of him, and dished him before the next season started.

If anything, that was one of the better moves.

Stick did.
He was text messaging Cashman to trade for him.

Right
It was one of Cashman's many good moves, according most folks here someone else is always repsonsible for those.

by matthaggs on May 18, 2007 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oi
I never said Cashman didn't make any good moves. I'm just pointing out that he's had some pretty big blunders.

And, for the record, I'm not a hater. I'm just trying to point out that he's made some real bad moves.

sorry, I should have made it clear I wasn't specifically referring to you.

There are others here with a lynch-mob mentality towards Cashman as if he were Isaiah Thomas or something.

by matthaggs on May 18, 2007 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with powerhouse.
He has made some awful moves, but also some good ones (like many gm's).  I think too many people just jump on one persons ideas and have no idea what the fuck they are talking about.  Pfisty has some great points, but then other people just pile on and just repeat the same shit (Igawa, Minky, etc).
Great Success!

Glenallen Hil....
hit the longest homerun I've ever seen anyone hit at Wrigley Field.

This was back before he became a Yankee, but he hit a ball on top of the roof across Waveland Ave (beyond LF).

I've seen a hundred balls hit the apartment building or break a window,  but never ON TOP of the apartment building's roof.

That was simply amazing and I don't think anyone has come close since.

by anaconda on May 18, 2007 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hil was
excellent for the Yanks. The Juice Man was a joke. How about Steve Kemp? Roy Smalley for Ron Davis I believe. Mike Lowell for three stiffs from Florida. Jay Witasick...Steve Karsay...Fred MGriff, Willie Mcgee

by John Amato on May 18, 2007 9:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Overall, Karsay was bad
He was good in '02. Too bad he barely pitched the next two years (not at all in '03 and like 6 innings in '04), and was so bad he and Stanton were cut in '05.

Any Move....
That was made before the season started in 1982 when  Steinbrenner declared the era of the homerun was dead and a speed/stolen base era was present.  An example of the results of this observation:  Dave Collins.

Damon in a year or two?
Serious observation, not just raking mud...

Quite a few Sox fans agreed with Theo when he declared that there was no way Damon was going to hold up as long as the contract he was demanding in 05.  Of course, it was still heartbreaking to see a hometown hero go (the fact that he went to the Yanks after repeatedly stating the Yanks were the one team he could never play for really whipped up alot of sentiment against him tho).

Anyway, it was hard not to notice that he was getting hurt progressively more often as the seasons went on; he always seemed to be in pain.  Could the breakdown be accellerating to the point his contract will seem like an albatross soon?

by Monty on May 19, 2007 12:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No
Because it's not that hard to replace a centerfielder (or a left fielder if it comes to that).  He's only making $13 million/year and only signed till '09.
Compared to a deal for a guy like Kevin Brown or Randy Johnson (more money, more important position), Damon is a bargain.
Now, if he'd swallow his pride, go on the DL and get healthy, he'd be more than a bargain.  Then again, I wonder if he's always hurt as badly as he lets on.

As they say
"Five bucks is five bucks" :-)

I didn't mean to imply Damon would be one of the worst; this thread just brought it back to mind.  I was musing more on whether or not it would turn out in the end to have been good for the sox/bad for the yanks.

by Monty on May 19, 2007 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,
I'm sure the resentment from the Sox fans to Damon made sense after they opened their account for JD Drew.  Ridiculous.

Mmmm, yeah, JD Drew...
...we'll have to see how that one works out.  There's still a chance he'll be worth it, but it sure doesn't look like an upgrade to a healthy Damon, arm or no arm.

We have much worse trades in the past year or so to bitch about (Arroyo for WMP!!!!  Meredith for Dougie!!!  Gaaaaaah)

by Monty on May 19, 2007 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Er actually, Coco Crisp
was supposed to be the replacement for Damon.  Yeah.  I like Crisp and I think he'll come around when that finger finally heals, but after nearly a full year I'm beginning to wonder if that will ever happen.

Still... promising.

Ugh, too many promising but currently lacking holes on this Sox team.  We're dooooooomed!
