Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Le Pettitte

Quick take:

Welcome home Andy Pettitte. He got his first win as a Yankee after three years and it was a thing of beauty. It's a different Andy that's for sure.

I heard Michael Kay say that Andy used to throw 95 mph which is just remarkable in its absurdity. Pettitte topped out at 92 on a good day in his prime. Now he changes speeds, hits his spots, and keeps batters off balance. I'm still not sure how he will do for a full season with his velocity mostly around 87-89, but it was a joy to see him only have one, three ball count all night and control the game completely. And we know he's a fierce competitor which always keeps him in games even when he has men on base.

ARod is unconscious right now. I've been trying to think of another HR steak like this and I can only come up with Don Mattingly when he hit eight in eight games in '87.

Melky Man is coming alive finally, going 3-4 and made a fine catch in left.

Give it up for Minky. He does look really good at first base, especially the way Jeter used the turf to bounce a throw to get an out at 1B. The bench is still unbalanced when they are healthy unfortunately.

My man Kevin Thompson whacked a double and drove in two runs late in the game. And who wanted him called up? He did well when he came up last year, but it'll be tough for him to get a real chance in Pinstripes realistically so...he might become a nice bargaining chip for Cashman.

Update [2007-4-11 3:12:51 by anaconda]:

Just to add my two cents to John’s commentary, I would argue that the unsung heroes these last two games are Damon and Jeter at the top of the order.   Of course, Captain Jeter is rarely overshadowed on this team, but the play of A-Rod -- along with the performances of Pavano and Pettitte -- seem to have done just that.

Damon and Jeter are a combined (7-18, .389 AVG) with 3 RBIs and 9 runs scored this series -- including the HR by Damon to essentially put Tuesday’s game away in the 5th inning.   It almost seems as if these guys are on-base every time Abreu and A-Rod step up to the plate and have been right in the middle of every rally.

It’s great to see Damon get off to a hot start after being hampered the first week with the strained calf muscle.

Thanks Al
I heard mention on another blog that A-Rod was on Letterman last night and there may have been some shirtlessness involved. Any chance you may have that? It's for Alex's good--I just wanted to make sure that's he's not sporting any dangerous-looking moles.

Arod sex tape
I think you may have something here... You can't tell me Arod didn't have a secret camera stashed in his closet when he was having sleep-overs with Jeter!

La PettItte
Great to see Andy really battle.  Will echo the above comments that Jeter and Damon are doing great job of getting on base.  Overall the offense is nothing short of terrific.  Starters have done well these last two games, let's hope that continues.  Still concerned with the defense as played in the two opening series.  Yes, A-Rod is indeed unconscious.

I guess a
negative so far though has been Proctor's performance. He hasn't looked sharp in any of his outings.

Relaunch Right on
I think Proctor is still trying to recover from being Torre's mule last season. He does look tired--even in warm-ups. If he's not hurt and hiding an injury, I suspect he's not fully recovered.

These two games
seem to pick up where they left off last year (before they went cold in Detroit).   Hopefully it continues and this year is fun like last year was.

Haha
All props to Al and his highlights, but don't miss the highlight of the Arod homer on the mlb website.  It's the home broadcast, and as mentioned in the thread below, the Twins announcers were in the middle of talking about how amazingly BOOF was pitching Arod- made him miss a 3-1 change!  Unfortunately, the clip picks up with them saying, "I love it- BOOF!  3-2 pitch... Oops.  Oops- That was a fastball, and we speak of it in the past tense."  It's always fun to see people who don't know what they're talking about revealed in their glorious idiocy.

I think
Michael Kay had a good point about Andy not using his cutter as much later in his career. It seems Andy is going to be more of a groundball pitcher, to go along with Wang and it seems Pavano. I just hope our defense can perform well behind these guys when there are lots of ground balls.

It will make the
Angels series all the more interesting if they get runners on base. They killed Wang a couple times last year by having hit and runs, what seemed like every pitch. Jeter and Cano don't field thier position too well while they are standing on 2nd base...

With the exception
of the series against the devil rays, the yankees defense has been pretty good. It was exceptionally good for Pavano's second start. I think Jeter, Cano, A-Rod, and Doug "Mint" Mientkiewicz can get the job done. Call me too optimistic, but it's close to a certainty that A-Rod will put up his most impressive numbers as a Yankees this season - then demand a contract extension. Others are talking about this too:

Sinker is the chic pitch of the 21st century
Given the superballs pitchers are throwing today, and the size and strength of today's hitters, the sinker is really the pitch of choice. I was fascinated to read that Wang didn't come into the league throwing the sinker, but was taught it by Neal Allen--who is teaching other young Yankee arms how to throw it as well.

Makes great sense. If thrown properly (I could never get it to work consistantly), it is a dastardly pitch that cannot be elevated.

True, the pitch can tax an infield--especially one as potentially porous as ours.

I think I can make that happen
I played in the early 80s back when beta-maxes were all the rage. I do have a video though that I think I can dupe. Gimme some time ... I'm old school.

Remember the 8 in 8 days (but not one every day) in 2005 that helped get us back on the winning side of things?

KT
KT is 27, he is not a prospect and certainly not someone you could use as a bargaining chip in a deal.

As for the Twins announcers, one of my favorite calls ever was their radio guys screaming "NO WAY! NOOOOOO!" when Giambi hit his grand slam against them in 2002.
