The rotation: Igawa is not going anywhere!

IF you watched the game last night you know a lot more than the box score.

First the box score. Yanks won 2-0.  Igawa went 5 innings, no runs two hits, 3 walks, 65 pitches.

Sounds great, but hold on.  The wind was blowing in as it often does there.  It was really strong. At least one ball was a home run on 98% of the big league regular season games.  The wind may have saved him a couple of other times.

3 walks is still too many.  In addition he had periods where he struggled.  He lost the release point and threw some awful looking pitches, way way off target.  When he was behind he seemed to tense up and then had further problems.  It was not a great performance.

It was good enough to keep him in the opening rotation.  I have 3 reasons for believing this.

First, Pavano has not pushed himself ahead of Igawa.

Second, I heard Torre quoted as wanting the second lefthanded starter.  To me this is a key.  I expect the rotation to be Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Igawa, then Pavano when the schedule makes Joe use 5.  Karstens will make the club in long releif and be the spot starter.

Third,  Joe likes the experience pitchers (all players actually) and the Yankees have enough investment in Igawa and Pavano that they will be forced to prove they cannot do it before they get removed.

So, we will see Igawa pitch in the show.  He is struggling with his confidence.  I hope he does well enough to hear some New York cheers.  He clearly can have nerve problems at this point.  I have the feeling he can establish himself over the season to be a solid Big League performer.  We only need him to be an adequate number four.  If he can go a couple games over 500 and pitch us 150 innings he'll help the team.

When watching the game
he threw a bunch of straight up challenge fastballs. I don't see his 90 mile an hour fastball phasing anyone outside spring training.

When the regular season comes around the hitters will ahve been studying him on tape and will know all of his pitches.

That slider of his is nice when he uses it low in the strikezone, but he throws it for a high strike sometime which could be disasterous, easily.

He has been spotty with that curveball of his, sometime he can't seem to get it to the catcher sometimes its pretty good.

I certainly believe he will be on the roster, and Joe will use him. I just don't think he is going to be very good the second or third time around the league.

(I have his last two starts in MP4 format, if I am ambitious I will edit that to show you exactly what I mean... I don't think I can post viseo on this site but maybe I can Utube it and like it.... only if I am ambitious)

I'll take that. For a fifth starter, third time
through the league could mean 2008.

He's gonna' blow
The recipe for disaster in the Major Leagues, and a key reason why decent minor league pitchers never make the show is the following:

No Gas
No Control
No Heart

Igawa might have the heart, but with an 87-89 mph straight fastball elevated in the zone is gonna get powdered. Guys without gas--especially Maddux have to know how to pitch and even more importantly, have to have pinpoint control--not just once in a while, but for 7 innings at least.

Igawa looks like a thrower to me. I've seen him pitch several times in pinstripes, and watched about four innings of work on Youtube when he was in Japan, and he has shown me no evidence that he: knows how to pitch; that he can be consistant low in the zone.

You are right. Cashman has a big investment in Igawa and almost has to use him. I fear though that watching him labor will be akin to Yankees fans enduring Randy Johnson in '06, Hideki Irabu, Kevin Brown, and even Kenny Rogers (for those of us old enough to remember).

the only difference
tween Rogers, Johnson et al, is that they were slotted as top of the order guys while Igawa isn't.

So at what point as back of the order guy does Igawa start hurting the team? If he stays over .500 is it all right? Or does the fact that Igawa is blocking the progression of young guys require that he pitch better than just .500?

I'm trying to remaion open minded about Igawa until at least May.

Depends
From what I've seen, Igawa is a high-pitch total guy who likely won't see much beyond 6-7 innings on a good day. He will be a large strain on the bullpen. For a #5 guy this is bad. The theory is a number 5 isn't facing top flight pitching so he ought to be able to go abit deeper without burning the pen for the 1 and 2 guys that follow.

As for blocking young guys, I think his price tag has more to do with blocking up and comers as opposed to his ability or lack thereof.

I wish they had kept Jaret Wright
Igawa is the same type of shitty, bullpen-burning erratic pitcher. At least Wright costs less and was a free agent after this year.
