No Option for Andy

Pete Abe is reporting that Pettitte's new deal won't include an option for 2009.

It's a minor point on a great day, but we're likely to face as big an overhaul next offseason as we did this offseason.

Pettitte, Mussina, Giambi, Abreu, Farnsworth will all come off the books.  Oh yeah, Carl Pavano, too.

Update [2007-12-3 19:8:43 by jscape2000]:: More good news from Yankeeland! A press release via Brother Peter:

The New York Yankees announced today they have signed catcher Jose Molina to a two-year contract. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated infielder Andy Phillips for assignment.
That warms my heart (if not my toes) on a blustery and bitter day. If you don't live in the Northeast, thank your lucky stars.

With the exception of Andy
I'll be happy to let those guys go; Abreu more so for the possibility of Type A compensation, as I am pleased with his performance.  We should get some draft picks back for these guys, but I think Moose would be the most likely to comeback.

Not worried
We'll have Joba in his second year as a starter, ready to take on more innings.  Wang will be Wang.  Kennedy or Hughes (depending on who gets traded) will also have a year's experience under their belt.  Santana, most likely heading to NY, will be Santana.  That leaves one spot open in a good FA year.

Is Pavano a Yankee?
Didn't he play for the Marlins at some point? Didn't realize we'd signed him. When does he start pitching?

Don't trade Hughes
Boston is not going to give Santana 150 mil.  Thank god AP is coming back.

I can't wait until next winter
It will suck to lose Andy, but damn it will be great to get rid of the rest of the pile of crap on that list!

uh...first base?
So designating Phillips for assignment means what? Release, trade or outright to minors once clearing waivers?  Who's on first now? Giambi full tiime? Did I miss something?

It only sucks

Major Overhaul ... Of what?
Dead wood.
With the exception of Pettitte, and possibly Abreu (but not at his asking price) there isn't one guy I'd give a rat's ass for.

We are draining the swamp after this season, and it's a beautiful thing!

Whooo
80 million coming off the books after this coming year.  26 more at least in the year after that.

Hopefully the Yanks will have an OF  of Gardner/Jackson/Tabata/Melky and a rotation of Hughes/Joba/Wang/Kennedy/Horne + Betances and a payroll of 140 (assuming Tex is signed).

Poor planning?
Surely Andy has some trade bait value.  He was more than adequate as a starter and defensive late inning replacement, just lost to an overcrowded position on this team.

If he goes DFA, that trade value drops to zero.  Was somebody asleep at the switch or am I missing something?

A 30 year old
1B who can't hit enough at his position doesn't have much trade value.

Pine tar and rosin bags
The Yanks already ordered their year's supply of rosin bags and pine tar, so there was nothing they could get for AAAAndy in a trade.
