Rasner signs!

Chad Jennings reports that Darrel Rasner has signed a minor league deal with the Yankees.

He'd have to win back his spot on the 40-man before he can make the team, so for now he's just minor league filler.

Oh yeah, somebody else re-signed with the Yankees, too. He got a major league deal.

While we're on the subject, I didn't have a chance to comment about it at the time, but check out Arod's new contract at Cot's:

08:$27M, 09:$32M, 10:$32M, 11:$31M, 12:$29M, 13:$28M, 14:$25M, 15:$21M, 16:$20M, 17:$20M

It's not backloaded!

While some of that financial flexibility could be lost due to the huge performance clauses for the record breaking homeruns, I hope this represents a refusal by the administration to hand out backloaded deals.

Given the rate of inflation in MLB salaries, $21 million for a 39-year old Arod might actually be palatable (knock on wood).

I think
it makes sense.  They've got something like 60 million coming off the books for '08 and 40 million on '09, might as well take advantage.

arod deal
actually you're completely wrong on the backloading. first of all because of inflation that money would have been worth less in 2015 then it is now. also the yankees could have investeded that money now at a high interest clip per year. so due to inflation and not having 10 years worth of investment return, the yankees actually lose money by frontloading deals. thank you for showing us how little you know about economics.

Inflation
Since he said "given the rate of inflation in MLB CONTRACTS..." I think he was talking about the steady rise of player salaries each year, i.e. a player of a-rod's skill-set will go for much more than the 21 mil he is currently set to make at that time and if they were so inclined, move him much easier than if his contract were backloaded.

That's what I was saying
If a 32 year old Torri Hunter is worth 16 million in 2008, good players are going to be much more expensive in 5 years.

The Yankees
are a baseball team, not a hedge fund. They have to deal with the luxury tax and salary caps.

The Yanks being the Yanks, any interest they lose due to front-loading is more than likely mitigated by the fact that they won't be paying luxury taxes on a 40 year-old DH. The Yanks are not going to put $ into a high-risk vehicles.

Umm...
unless the Yankees start playing football, basketball or hockey, they don't have to worry about salary caps at all.

Doesn't matter ...
Economics don't matter with a team with a license to print money. I just hope they print enough to put together a strong middle-relief corps, and maybe land a frontline starter--like a Santana without gutting our system.

Personally, I wouldn't care if Arod got $50million so long as he rakes and helps bring some bling to NYC.
