Torre arrives in Tampa

LoHud:

Accompanied by Brian Cashman, Joe Torre arrived at Legends Field about 70 minutes ago and is now meeting with the Steinbrenners.

Obviously he did not go down there to get fired in person. It is evident the Yankees are finalizing a contract extension for him to return as manager.

More on this story as it becomes available.

Maybe this thing will finally get settled so we can address other issues.

Wow!
That is definitely a big surprise. I was convinced the old man was gone. It would have been good for a change but at the same time, Torre has been a very able manager for a volatile franchise.

Press conference scheduled for 4pm
ESPN reporting they are close to a one-year deal for Torre's return.

HE TURNED IT DOWN!
He will not be returning

The Yankees just announced that Joe Torre will not return as manager. He turned down a $5 million deal that included $3 million on incentives.

Well...
How does this play with the free agents?  They offered him a pretty reasonable deal- winning the WS, he gets more than he made this year, even failing to make the playoffs he still would have been the highest paid manager, and if he reached the WS he gets a 2009 option.  It's hard to say the team disrespected him, he just turned it down- so what do Arod, Mo, and Jorge do about it?

Not necessarily
It is not a stretch to think that the guys who are free agents will still see the Boss' comments and/or the pay cut proposal as a slap in the face of the guy who won four rings for the team. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with that stance, but I think that is how Jorge and Mo will view this circus.

agree with you
it's not like torre came out first and said he didn't want to manage anymore... he turned down an offer that he probably felt was a little beneath him.. the old guys will probably see that.
