The Best Part of Monday

Free Baseball!

The best part of Monday is that there's still baseball to be played.

The Padres and the Rockies are going to play a single game to determine who will face those fighting Phillies.

I've said before that I'm rooting for the Rockies in this one because it'll bring the total number of teams to have made the playoffs in the last ten years up to 22.

While this might seem a silly reason to root against the first Little League team I ever played for, I want to remind the world that baseball enjoys more parity than football or basketball.

If figures to be a sweet game, MVP-hopeful Matt Holliday (remember him?) against Cy Young-hopeful Jake Peavy.

To make it even sweeter, this counts as a regular season game not a postseason game.
So Peavy has a shot at his 20th win and Holliday can overtake Ryan Howard for the league lead in RBIs.

Which side are you on?

For the record, if I had NL Ballots, I would vote:
1) Hanley Ramirez
2) Matt Holliday
3) David Wright

and

1) Jake Peavy (1.03 WHIP!)
2) Brandon Webb
3) Aaron Harang

Hanley Ramirez?
I doubt it...unlike the year A-Rod won MVP in 2003, there are plenty of MVP candidates on contending teams. Ramirez has no shot. I think Jimmy Rollins may get a few votes, possibly helped by the Phillies' playoff run.

I'm not a fan of the
'contenders only' approach. And a .332/.386/.562 with line from a shortstop (with 51 steals to boot) is MVP material.
His OPS was 9th among qualifiers in the NL.

I probably should have given more consideration to Chase Utley or Ryan Howard.

Either way, when the Marlins trade Miguel Cabrera (either this winter or next), it'll be because they think Ramirez is ready to be the man.

Rollins will win
Like the above post said, guys like Ramirez only win when their numbers dwarf everyone else's.

Whether it's right or not is irrelevant, they won't give the award this year to a guy on a crap team.

Rollins has more runs, rbi's and home runs than Ramirez does, and his team pulled off a historic comeback.  If he doesn't win, he'll definitely finish ahead of Hanley.

I can't say theat I've ever watched him play
but by all accounts his defense is terrible.  He's a lock to move to another position, which would make his numbers a tad less impressive.

Miguel Cabrera
He is 24 years old, a career 320 hitter, 930 OPS, averages 30 HR 115 rbi, and almost 100 runs and plays everyday.

Sure, he is gettin fat and can't play defense for his life, but stick him at 1st base, and in between jeter and arod in the line-up. He would be hitting .375 with 120 runs.

Sorry ...
I think I'd probably vote Jimmy Rollins, or Matt Holliday for NL MVP. Peavy is a lock for the Cy Young regardless of what he does today.

Without looking too much into it:

MVP

Holliday
Wright
Rollins

Cy Young

Peavy
Webb
Penny

MVP
It has to be Rollins or Holliday. (If you look at ALL of their numbers, XBH, 2bs, runs, etc.) these guys are head and shoulders above the rest. Holliday's case is hurt because his split stats heavily favor him at Coors Field. Also, if Hanley Ramirez were on a better team, his name would be in the running.

Cy Young has to be Peavy.

food for thought:
the only 2 people with more TB than Arod:

Holliday at 382
Rollins at 380

ARod at 376

I'd have to say Rollins
He made the playoff boast in spring training and backed it up with a spectacular season April through September.
