Gojira attacks New York

Gojira and the Yanks sweep the Tampa Bay Mothra and will soon face the the Boston MechaGodzilla. Matsui is my second favorite Yankee, as many have guessed (Jeter is of course my fave) not only because of his selfless attitude and smooth play, but because I get to talk about one of my favorite cult-y hobbies...strange Asian cinema, whenever he's at bat. Orioles fans don't get to talk about how their left fielder Ultraman hit a walk off homerun.

Anyway, back to the wrap-up: Karstens was uneven, but the offense kept on keeping on. Cano came through yet again with a clutch hit and the 40 man roster saved the bullpen for this weekend. The Yanks will be well rested when the Bosox come into town. This series has lost its importance and is just another tune up for the Bombers, but it would be fantastic they stuck it to Boston for four games. I'd bet that would begin the calls for a dismantling and an end to "The idiots" as we know them.

Tomorrow Taiwanese Chien-Ming Wang pitches. Now their films are more arty...but that's a whole other conversation.

Lost in the turmoil
of a sweep and Godzilla's return is the fact that the Yankees have won 6 games in a row for the first time this season.

win streaks
that actually did occur to me around the 5th inning of last night's game, but then i totally forgot about it.  i'm not sure what significance that has -- after all, it's against two teams well south of the .500 mark and who have been out of the pennant race for months.  actually, the significance of it may be that they've actually gone so long without a long win streak and still are in the position they are in.  that's pretty amazing, i think.  this team has been a model of consistency -- they've won 32 of 44 series so far, which is close to 75%.

it's going to be interesting to see how Torre manages these last two weeks.  is it going to be more of what we've seen the last couple of weeks, or does he start gearing up the team for the playoffs maybe in that last week?  when the playoffs start, it's going to have been a month since the Yankees played a game with any kind of meaning for either team -- they've essentially gone back to spring training mode.  it's nice that everyone is getting rested, but there may be downsides to that as well.  how do you keep that competitive edge while coasting in neutral?

3 out of 4 clinches the division.

Not to mention.....
that Manny is OUT for the entire series, according to Tito Francona this evening.

Winning 3 of 4 against Boston is certainly possible since Manny is usually good for a couple of bombs every time he faces Yankee pitching.

No Schilling.

No Manny.

No Papelbon.

No guts.

No playoffs.

Wow, they're all out?
They don't have a prayer, no matter how many homers Ortiz hits.

This is going to be sweet.

I wonder
if someone will stick up for their captain and floor Papi.
Not that I condone violence.
Thank you Aaron Boone.

Hey!
Let's not get too over-excited about a Yankee-BoSox game... ( I learned my lesson in the '04 ALCS)

First we win, THEN we celebrate!

Hidden beneath Matsui and Cano's hitting was a stellar performance by Darrel Rasner. Four shutout innings, striking out 5 ( including 4 of the first 6 he faced). He only allowed 1 hit and lowered his season ERA to 0.77.
