Is Scott Proctor being trained for the starting rotation?

Ken Davidoff of Newsday says yes:

NAPLES, Fla. -- With their starting rotation their greatest uncertainty, the Yankees likely will tell Scott Proctor -- a pleasant surprise as a reliever in 2006 -- to plan for next season as though he will be a starter.

"We'll probably have him proceed and prepare as a starter, because you can always go the other way, slide him down and reduce his workload. But it's hard to go the other way," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said yesterday as the general managers' meetings concluded. "But that's for another day."

Cashman soon will deliver these likely instructions to Proctor, as the righthander has to work out according to the Yankees' directives.

In the interest of avoiding a free-agent purchase they will regret, the Yankees have explored the trade market for a starting pitcher. Florida intends to keep Dontrelle Willis, but the White Sox are open to dealing anyone from their rotation and could ask for some of the young pitching Cashman acquired this month in the trades of Gary Sheffield and Jaret Wright.

Cashman spoke of owning "a lot of trade chips that might be interesting to some people." Although outfielder Melky Cabrera is more likely to stay than go, he would hold significant value in an effort to acquire pitching.

Proctor was undeniably the Yankees' most trusted reliever out of the bullpen in front of Rivera last season and I don't know why they would want to mess with him by trying to make him a starter. Cashman would still have to replace Proctor in the bullpen and I'm not ready just yet to make Brian Bruney the go-to-guy in the 7th and 8th innings (when Farnsworth is MIA).

I hope Cashman has something else brewing because this doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I'd MUCH rather see Rasner or Karstens get a shot at the rotation and take your chances than move Proctor out of the pen and leave another huge vacancy in the bridge to Rivera.

I agree,
leave Proctor in the pen.  Why mess with something that was working.

I can't think of a worse idea
Proctor pitched way over his head this season and really doesn't have the stuff to be a starter. This idea smacks of "rebuilding mode"

I like the Idea
Proctor has started a few games and done really well in those games. He used to be a starter in the minors. In the pen we have rivera, Farnsworth(who has to be better) Bruney ( who was a great suprise) Myers Brittion who did very well with baltimore, and the reliver maket is a lot better (and cheaper) than the starter market

Would prefer other options
My vote is for Karstens and Rasner in the rotation--unless we can pry someone of note--like a Buerhle from the Sox.

Given the fragility of our pen, I don't think we can have enough arms.

Leave him in the pen
There is bound to be an injury to Farnsworth and a wake-up call for Bruney.

Starters need more than two pitches
And Proctor doesn't have a third pitch. He is much more likely to get shelled this season as a reliever than he is to succeed as a starter.

Yup, people
that can't hack it as starters become relievers.  There is a reason he is in the pen.

Overworked
Well, Torre would love it- Proctor could start every 5 days they Joe could blow out his arm by bringing him in from the pen on days he doesn't start.  He could reach 100 appearances, which seemed to be what Joe was trying to do to him last year.

Torre will
say "there hasn't been a pitcher with over 300 innings in a long time, I think Proctor is that man".

I assume he will say that because he
sucks as a manager, right troll?

he got almost as many innings as wright coming out of the bullpen this year

I Say Proctoring is Settling
For the Yankees to place Scott Proctor anywhere in the starting rotation would be the equivalent of a a surgeon placing a bandaid over a fire victim... ludicrous. The baseball season is already long enough without sending a semi-decent relief pitcher to the mound as a starter. Do the Yankees WANT a losing season? This move may work in a Disney movie but not in real life. We have Wang and Mussina, then who?. The Big Unit is an aging question mark and Pavano is seriously MIA. We traded Sheffield, which lessens the fear of our starting line-up and we are still vulnerable with our starting rotation and bull pen. The Yankees need to spend the money for a couple of true starters and a middle relievers...QUICK!!! I'm glad they are stockpiling young pitchers in the farm system like they use to but we also desperately need starters and relievers who can attack from Game 1. Zito, Igawa, Lilly, Pettite, or Meche. Grab 2 or, hopefully, grab them all and snub Boston. Pick up another big home run bat for first base and our chances are great to make it to the world series, otherwise Boston or Detroit will be laughing at us come post-season 2007.
