Thanks so much.

Hey Al,
Do you have the video of that "Rocky" segment they play at the stadium if they are losing in the 9th inning?

Animal house?
I thought it was Bluto's speech from Animal House ("Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"), that's what it was last month when I was there (and they lost anyway).

On Sunday
It was definitely a Rocky sequence. Maybe they've switched?

it might be on YouTube
fans post clips there of the 7th inn stretch, for exmple.

youtube and google video are worth a shot.

And Thnks everyone!

I was on cloud nine, last nite!

I didn't want it to end.

Man did I get nervous when Joe took Wang out.  The whole, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing.

They Jacked My Title !

The first pun I thought of using was "Bombs Away," also "Tigers
Clipped'" as well as "Mr. October" "Got Big Mo!" "BAM - GIAM - BINO's Ghost" and and I was trying to find a way to work the "Bronx Zoo" and "Tigers" together.

Hey, got any title suggestions ?  Just picture yourself as a headlines writer for da Post or Daily News.

great shot from the upper deck
There's nothing like Yankee Stadium packed to gills for a playoff game. Just watching the game out here in Cali I got some chills.

bullpen
What's up with Torre yanking Wang with two outs and no one on?  Wang is rolling along, retiring six straight and next thing I know Joe is walking out to the mound to unload his bullpen. Myers gives up a shot and now we have Proctor getting wasted for just one inning and then Farnsworth comes in to give everyone high blood pressure.   Joe was left with just Villone if Farnsworth fails. If the Tigers tie that game up Joe is totally exposed with no one left to go into the extra innings.

Lidle
He's there for two reasons.  First is mop-up in case a starter sucks.  Second is for extra-innings affairs.

Torre
our achilles heel has always been Torre and how he manages the bullpen.  i can't imagine what he's thinking, pulling Wang when he did.  you let Wang finish the 7th, then you've got the entire bullpen available to get three measly outs in the 8th before turning it over to Rivera.  everything was set up perfectly, and Torre can't follow the script.

It seems obvious
That he should have gone with Wang for longer.  Torre isn't perfect but I have to assume he knows maybe more than you or I, and Wang was not at his best last night. He wasn't throwing the sinker a lot.  He didn't have his best night, and he got away with it because the Tigers already are a hollowed out shell of their former selves.  Maybe he didn't want to risk it for longer, and he tried the lefty on lefty thing.

However one thing I think he is doing that is smart, is doing things similarly to how he's been doing things all year. The newer more unpredictable pitchers are being used in a way they recognize as routine.  This is the first postseason for some of these guys, and they are being called up as they have been all year, in roles and situations they know.

Clearly the middle relief barely got it done, as has been true of them all year. Sometimes they are great, sometimes they blow it for us, often, they get us through with some nailbiting.

I still think it's OK Torre went to them, they have to get used to the big stage.  This was a game where we had a decent lead, and getting everyone's feet wet isn't a bad idea.  We had Mo in the end, also with a comfortable lead, which shows that Joe wasn't going to leave everything to chance.

Mo threw very few pitches, he could be used tonight.  Then there's an off day so he could probably go in game 3.

not Torre
The achilles heal has not been Torre's management of the bullpen. In 05 it was the Unit and the offense. In 04 it was almost the whole team falling apart. In 03 it was the starters as much as the bullpen, do you remember Wells. In 02 it was the whole pitching staff. In 01 it was bad luck.

Torre makes questionable bullpen calls but the affect of those moves has been overstated.

Very well said
I mean we won didn't we?  And we won with our offense, which is what we've mostly had to do all year.  Our middle relief bullpen isn't our strongest area, so we need good offense prior to those innings.

Weren't we all screaming for pitching at the trade deadline? Torre wanted a fielder with a bat, and he got it in Abreu, along with some pitching.  Hasn't that worked out pretty freaking well?  Yes some of his moves are questionable, but the team does seem to win behind a lot of those moves.

What Torre might have been thinking...
  1. Wang's pushing 100 pitches; long season already and he's not had his 'best' night.
  2. We need seven outs - Myers gets one, Proctor three, Mo three (obviously the Myers part doesn't work out).
  3. I save Wang for a Game 4/5; or Game 1 ALCS.
At first I questioned the move to the bullpen too; but the more I thought about it, the move only cost NY 1 run (which Jeter got back anyway). And as stressful as it was (and painful), Proctor and Farnsworth did get their outs.

The reality is, these two guys are going to have to come up big - might as well test them when the team has a big lead so that 1. they can get a little confidence rolling and 2. Torre can see if they can get it done.

I don't see how NY wins 11 games without those two pitchers being effective.

But God help us if he puts Villone in.

The defense in the field last night was stellar - even if the pitching wasn't.

Excellent article on Jeter
In SI:

"It gives you goose bumps," Yankees catcher Sal Fasano said. "It's amazing to see the love New York fans have for Jeter. It's like when you were a kid when your favorite player hit a home run and you jumped up and down. Well, here there are 50,000 people, and to all of them Jeter is their favorite player."

Hell, I become verklempt
Seeing a legend play in our lifetime (not just on ole timers day).

And yeah, Reggie was a legend, and ReggieBar notwithstanding, he was only around for five years.
And because Reggie was a merc, it was always hard to know if really cared.

But DJ is part of our DNA.

You always come up with the neatest nuggets, JK.
