Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Chacon a Yankee

ESPN: Yankees get 27-year-old right-hander from Rockies. In exchange for Chacon, the Rockies get Ramon Ramirez and Edwardo Sierra.

This season his stats are:

1-7 won-loss 72.2 IP  69 Hits 33 Runs 7 HR 36 BB 39 K 4.09 ERA. His era is impressive for a Colorado pitcher. I don't know much about him, but he's young at 27 and fills a big hole for the Yanks at this point. It was important to make a move before the deadline so other pitcher hungry teams didn't compromise the deal.

Cashman

"Saturday we have a starter now. It's as simple as that," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "Our team is working hard on the field. We're working hard in the front office to be in a position to improve the club. It seems like we've been plugging holes on the run the last few weeks at an unusual pace.

For a team with supposedly no prospects in the minor leagues, the Yanks were able to hold onto Duncan and Henn.

With the Angles losing in eighteen innings and their bullpen spent, the Yanks are also set up nicely for this series. Our guys are rested and with Mussina, Chacon, and Johnson suddenly the weekend doesn't look too bad.

Manny
I agree that the Angels should be plenty tired after that marathon against the Blue Jays. But I'm also hoping that the Manny stuff will throw the Red Sox off their game and give us a chance to gain ground. Can't tell if the guy just likes to mess with everybody's head a couple of times a season or if he really wants to be traded, but telling Francona he wouldn't play yesterday after Nixon went on the DL is just sad.

Chacon
heck, Chacon's numbers look damn good to me.  a 4.09 ERA at Colorado is equivalent to a 3.09 anywhere else.  and a 1-7 record means nothing on a team with Colorado's overall record.  heck, look at the run support he's getting -- in 5 of those 7 losses Colorado scored one run or less.  so you can toss the W-L record out the window.

this looks like it could be an excellent deal -- let's hope he doesn't fall victim to the Yankee mystique phenomenon that seems to jinx all the high profile pitchers we bring in here.

I'd hardly call him high profile
So don't worry about him putting up a bad  season.  The great thing about him is that he's 27.  And the Yankees get a live audition BEFORE thinking about signing him to a 3 or 4 year deal.
Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio.

Chacon
yeah, i didn't mean that Chacon was high profile -- only that i hoped he wouldn't be effected like the players who are high profile seem to be effected.  in fact, maybe that's the key here to this Yankee "mystique" problem -- it only effects those for whom there are high expectations.  you bring in players with low expectations, and they are the ones that overachieve.  look at what Leiter, Small, and particularly Cano have done.  let's hope that's the trend line that Chacon follows!

Hmmm...
Looks like his ERA is almost 2 full points better on the road than it is at Coors Field.  Check this out:

2005 ERA:
Home - 4.97
Away - 3.12

I also like his hits/innings pitched ratio.
