<div class="entry-body">
  As for on the mound, Nova worked at 90-91 and touched 92 with a fastball that had above-average movement down and in to right-handed hitters. He would sometimes overthrow his curveball into more of a slider, but the pitch was beween 76-80 and flashed above-average with late snap... His changeup also flashed above-average with great deception and late depth...

That being said, his fastball would drop to 87-90 late in the game and lost some life, his curveball wasn’t always the same pitch and lost bite, and he would hang his changeup at times... His mechanics are solid, his frame has room for more bulk, he’s a solid athlete with good makeup and arm action, and he has simple, repeatable motion from a classic high 3/4 arm angle.

<div class="entry-body">
  The last few years have seen the spread between the best and worst teams in the game narrow considerably, as natural cycles of aging and unnatural wealth-redistribution mechanisms serve to bring the extremes towards the middle. Throw in a National League in which three-quarters of the teams can see themselves as one trade-deadline deal away from playing in October, and you have 1980s-style parity. The Diamondbacks and Cubs have so far separated themselves at the top, while the Nationals and Rangers have yet to reach 10 wins. Everyone else, from #3 to #28, is separated by just 6½ games. That’s not a fluke: MLB has spent most of the 2000s working towards NFL-style competitive balance, and that’s what it has. Whether that’s best for baseball remains to be seen—the game is at its best when great teams fight out great races in the regular season—but it does provide a heaping helping of hope and faith.

    <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7438">Joe Sheehan, Baseball Prospectus.</a>
The Yanks are two games back in the loss column, and one game over .500.

  There’s nothing you can do. Tito’s hands are tied. It’s going to be nice to get Mike Lowell back pretty soon. (MLB) makes the schedule and it’s not just the 20 games in a row we play — 8 o’clock getaway games in Oakland. There’s not enough [complaining] and moaning that goes on to get it changed. I don’t know what we can do.

That’s what strings guys out. It’s tough playing 20 in a row, anyway, but whenever you get Sunday night baseball here and Sunday night baseball there, it’s at 8 o’clock and you don’t get home until 5 in the morning. Then you’re right back out there the next day.

  <em>"By following A-Rod’s workout routine, Melky has gotten stronger and more fit. He’s only 23 and his power is just starting to develop."</em>

Pete A. beat me to a story I've been meaning to write: Melky has made real strides at the plate. He's been working with Arod and Kevin Long, and we're seeing some of the early returns. I don't expect him to stay on pace for 30 homers, but even if he regresses to last season's performance level from here on out he'll set offensive career highes.
And it's not just the slugging. He's walking at his 2006 rate, when his .360 OBP made him a real asset in center field.
If he can play like that he'll either be very hard to dislodge in center, or he'll net a huge return in a trade.
