A-Rod set to return Tuesday

From Pete Abe:

Alex Rodriguez remains on target to rejoin the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The third baseman, out since April 28 with a strained right quadriceps, hit a grand slam to center field during his 15 at-bats in a simulated game Sunday. He is scheduled to play in an extended spring training game Monday against Philadelphia minor leaguers before returning to New York.

“It’s the best I’ve felt since the injury,” Rodriguez said.

A-Rod faced four different Yankees minor league pitchers, getting credit for five hits in his 15 at-bats. He also had a sacrifice fly and walked five times.

“It’s invaluable to get those at-bats,” Rodriguez said. “You can’t duplicate it anywhere else.”

My only concern with A-Rod is that he doesn't put too much pressure on himself upon his return because we've seen how much he struggles in recent years when the thinks too much.

Hopefully, the rest of the offense can finally relax and start hitting the way we all know they can.

Makeup game to be played next month

Tyler Kepner reports that the Yanks have confirmed that a makeup game will NOT be played this weekend or the off-day on Monday.

Sounds like the plan is to have a two stadium day-night double header when these teams clash again next month (June 27 - 29).

The best news to come out of this is that the Yankee offense will be without A-Rod for two more games instead of three.  He is slated to return on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Pete Abe notes the Yanks have now reshuffled the rotation as a result of the rainout:

Saturday:  Johan Santana vs. Andy Pettitte

Sunday:  Oliver Perez vs. Chien-Ming Wang

Monday:  OFF

Tuesday:  Mike Mussina (vs. Orioles)

Wednesday:  Darrell Rasner  (vs. Orioles)

Thursday:  Ian Kennedy  (vs. Orioles)

A-Rod now headed to the DL

I just heard Cashman being interviewed on the YES postgame and he stated that A-Rod has been placed on the 15-day DL as a result of re-aggravating his quad over the weekend in Cleveland.

In medical terms, the MRI revealed that he has a Grade 2 quadriceps strain.

Damn.  Who's next?

UPDATE:

Pete Caldera has this little nugget on the corresponding roster move:

Cashman said the Yankees (14-14) were expected to call up another pitcher, possibly reliever Chris Britton, since Hughes taxed the bullpen again. Wilson Betemit (conjunctivitis) is improved enough to begin a rehab assignment at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre today, and he could fill A-Rod's roster spot later this week.

Chris Britton?  Are you kidding me?  I hope he didn't unpack his suitcase.

At this point, I don't care who they recall from Scranton as long as Girardi uses him.  It makes no sense to have a fresh body sitting in the pen to simply rot while the rest of the pen not named Mo or Joba continues to get overworked.

A-Rod injury update

Pete Abe has the latest:

Just spoke to Brian Cashman. Alex Rodriguez was in New York today and was scheduled to meet with a physical therapist to get some work done on his strained right quad.

No tests are planned. “It’s mild,” Cashman said.

A-Rod will be on his way to Chicago tomorrow morning. No word yet on whether he will play but it’s likely he will get at least a few days off.

It sounds like A-Rod will probably miss the White Sox series, which means Morgan Ensberg will be the starting Third Baseman until further notice.

While Ensberg is no A-Rod, he is no Miguel Cairo either.

Perhaps the biggest improvement on this team over the last 12 months is their depth on the bench.  There's no telling where this team might be right now if not for the big contributions of Jose Molina, Chad Moeller, Alberto Gonzalez, and Ensberg considering the various injuries to Jeter, Posada, and now A-Rod to start the season.

It's never a good thing to have one of your key players out of action, but at least this year's team is much better suited to handle such an occurrence.
