Baby Bomber Recap 8/20/13: Ian Clarkin makes professional debut with scoreless inning

Recapping the Yankees minor league affiliates' results from Tuesday.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders: W 3-1 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Dellin Betances 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Jim Miller 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HB

The RailRiders doubled up the IronPigs in the hit column with twelve on the night and overcame Lehigh Valley jumping out to a 1-0 lead early in the game before the pitching staff managed to keep them off the board for the remainder of the game.

Double-A Trenton Thunder: L 4-6 vs. New Britain Rock Cats

CF Mason Williams 2-5, 3B, RBI
LF Ramon Flores 2-4, 2B, BB
C Gary Sanchez 0-3, 2 BB
1B Kyle Roller 2-4, HR, 2 RBI - 15th double of the season
2B Jose Pirela 0-4, K

DH Yeral Sanchez 1-3, 2B, RBI, K
3B Casey Stevenson 0-3, BB, 2 K
SS Reegie Corona 0-4, 2 K

Mikey O'Brien 5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HB - four groundouts, four flyouts
Zach Nuding 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Trenton managed to get on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning but the Rock Cats made sure that didn't last long with three runs of their own in the bottom of the same inning. The Thunder would try to claw back with runs in the seventh and eighth, but ultimately fell short for their 62nd loss of the season in a tight playoff race.

High-A Tampa Yankees: L 2-11 vs. Clearwater Threshers

SS Cito Culver 0-4, 2 K
CF Taylor Dugas 1-3, BB, CS, OF assist - batting .284 with Tampa

1B Saxon Butler 0-3, BB, E3 - throwing error, 10th of the season
RF Cody Grice 0-3, RBI, 2 K
DH Jose Toussen 1-2, 2 BB, K

LF Ali Castillo 0-3, K

Cesar Vargas 4.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R/5 ER, 2 BB, K - six groundouts, three flyouts
Jaron Long 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R/0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Ben Paullus 2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, K

A six-run fifth inning really killed the Yankees, even though it was hardly the only blow of the game. The offense only managed three hits to the Threshers' 17. I think O'Brien commits an error in almost every game he plays in the field at third base.

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs: W 3-2 vs. West Virginia Power

CF Jake Cave 1-5, 2 K
SS Jose Rosario 1-3, BB, CS
DH Greg Bird 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K - 19th homer, 32nd double of the season (.289/.426/.518)

3B Dante Bichette Jr. 0-3, BB, 2 K - batting .211 this season
2B Angelo Gumbs 1-3, BB, K, 2 SB
RF Danny Oh 0-4, K
C Wes Wilson 0-4, 2 K
LF Daniel Aldrich 1-4, 2 K

Luis Niebla 4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HB - four groundouts, three flyouts
Kelvin Castro 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, BB
John Brebbia 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HB
Tyler Webb 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, pickoff
Vicente Campos 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Bird was the word once again when he put the RiverDogs on the board with a solo home run in the fourth and propelled them to a walk-off win in the eleventh with an RBI double.

Short Season-A Staten Island Yankees: L 0-2 vs. Brooklyn Cyclones

SS Abiatal Avelino 2-4, BB, SB, put out - batting .267 with SI
LF Michael O'Neill 0-5, 4 K - 76 Ks in 51 games
3B Eric Jagielo 1-1, 2B, 2 BB, HBP - 12th double of the season
1B Mike Ford 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
CF Brandon Thomas 0-4, K
RF Yeicok Calderon 0-3, BB, K - batting .250 this season
DH Kale Sumner 0-2, 2 BB
C Trent Garrison 1-4
2B Hector Crespo 1-4, 2 K

David Palladino 6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 5 K - ten groundouts, one flyout
Andy Beresford 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB

The damage against the Yankees was limited to only one inning but it is impossible to win if you don't score even if you out-hit the competition.
