Yankees 0, Indians 1: Phelps impressive. No offense.

Jason Miller

The first game of this double header goes to the Indians, as they beat Phelps and the Yankees 1-0.

This recap will be as quick as this game was. The Yankees winning streak would come to an end in the first game of this make-up double header, as they lose 1-0 to the Indians.

David Phelps was going against the ace of the red hot, now AL Central leading Cleveland Indians pitcher Justin Masterson. Masterson's performance was masterful, to say the least. He completely shut the Yankees offense down today, only giving up three walks and four hits while allowed no runs and striking out nine. It was still an impressive outing from Phelps this afternoon though. He went 6.2 innings and only gave up one run and four hits while striking out seven and walking five. That one run, the only run of the game, would be a home run to Jason Kipnis. The Phelpsinator (trying out a new nickname for this recap) needs to keep the walks down but he managed to get out of trouble and nearly go a full seven innings. Considering that he was matched up against the Tribe's ace, it was an overall impressive outing for him today. Nova better start showing a reason to take Phelps out of the rotation when he heals.

Now for the offense. Yeah, the offense. This won't take long. The Yankees best and really only chance to score came in the top of the second inning. With two outs, soon to be replaced Chris Nelson managed a single. Yankees All-Star first baseman Corban Joseph would walk and Defensive Gandalf Chris Stewart would hit an infield single to load the bases. Newly acquired Yankees SS Alberto Gonzalez would strike out. The only other two hits in the come would come from a Brett Gardner bunt single and a Brennan Boesch single into left field. That's it.

Another small note, but Preston Claiborne would regally come in to pitch a quick bottom of the 8th. He still continues to impress. Take that with Phelps' impressive start and the outlook of this team's pitching still looks good. Vidal Nuno will get his first Major League start in Game 2. Hopefully we'll have the same good pitching, and much more offense, coming up next on PINSTRIPED BIBLE!
