Yankees Just Another Team?

Jeff Freier of SB Nation New York says the Yankees no longer have that special aura. "They're still the kings, but there's a revolution taking place in the AL East. The Yankees are the best team in the division, but there's no special aura or mystique around them anymore."

Everyone Hurt = This Lineup

Jeter - SS Swisher - 1B Cano - 2B Pearce - DH Martin - C Granderson - CF Jones - RF Nix - 3B Ichiro - LF We've seen some interesting lineups this year, but this one may take the cake. Ugly. Get well soon, A-Rod and Tex... McGehee is the 25-man move for Pearce. He'll be sent to Charleston and recalled after rosters expand.

Yanks Acquire Steve Pearce; Brandon Laird DFA'd

The Yankees just acquired corner-infielder/outfielder Steve Pearce from the Astros for cash. Brandon Laird has been DFA'd to make room for him on the 40-man roster. In case you didn't know (as I didn't), Pearce was part of the AAA Empire State Yankees at the beginning of the year, hitting .318/.419/.568. The Yankees traded him to the Orioles for cash earlier this year. He was later claimed by the Astros when he was DFA'd by the Orioles. He played 49 games this year with the Orioles and Astros hitting .254/.347/.349. It looks like the Yankees are just trying to acquire additional depth at the corner infield & outfield spots, and I expect him to wind up back in AAA. This is certainly a bad sign for Brandon Laird.

Ivan Nova Will Miss Next Start, David Phelps Staying in Rotation

Nova complained about a stiff/tight shoulder during the sixth inning of last night's game. He's headed back to New York for tests and a trip to the DL can't be ruled out, according to Girardi. Just another injury in a long line of them for the Yankees this season, but if this can in any way explain why Nova has been getting lit up, hopefully they can get him right and back to being super again.

Joba Chamberlain to be demoted upon the return of CC Sabathia?

"With CC Sabathia due back from the disabled list on Friday, the Yankees will have to make a roster move to open a spot for their returning ace. According to a source, the team is considering a demotion for Chamberlain, who has struggled badly in his seven appearances." Joba's not looking great right now, so it would be hard to disagree with the decision. Though to be fair, Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada haven't looked great lately either.

Derek Jeter in pursuit of serious history

Jack Curry: Yankees Captain may have an outside chance at Rose's hits record.

Freddy Garcia: Faith, Family and Four Pitches

A dozen years into a big-league career, through ups and downs, Freddy Garcia sticks to that simple mantra. Staying positive, doing his job, making it happen one game, one pitch at a time.

Yankee Stadium, Citi Field to serve as guinea pigs for advanced replay next week

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the MLB execs have agreed to test two different styles of advanced replay next week, one radar-based and one camera-based. The technologies are similar to those implemented in tennis. The testing will take place during live games and will be used to test the accuracy of the system and for analysis (and not actually have any impact on the game).

CC Sabathia: Best Yankee starter ever by ERA+

I was doing research earlier, and I came across this somewhat surprising statistic: among starting pitchers, CC Sabathia currently holds the best ERA+ in Yankees history, at 135. His mark is two ticks above Hall of Famer Whitey Ford, who had a 133 in 2,323.2 more innings. CC also has the best won/loss percentage at .732, but take that stat with a grain of salt since CC benefits from a great offense that the likes of Mel Stottlemyre never had. Obviously, it's unlikely that CC keeps this pace up in ERA+, and he might even fall off the top this year since he's currently at 119 for 2012. CC will decline near the end of his current contract, but realizing this feat helps give some perspective on the amazing work the big fella has done in four seasons with the Yankees. Come back soon, CC.

Former Yankee Melky Cabrera suspended 50 games

UPDATE: Looks like Melky confirmed it: "My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used ... I am deeply sorry for my mistake." If true, this might explain his power surge over the past couple years. According to MLB's official Twitter account, Melky tested positive for "Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance." I guess it was actually just Testosterone pills, because no specification of any exact substance containing testosterone boosters is indicated.
