Well it finally happened, Cashman jettisoned his under performing lefty ,Tommy Layne. The Bronx Bombers have not had a lock down lefty option in the pen, other than Aroldis Chapman, all season long. Chasen Shreve has done well but has always had a weird split with lefties. Looking to the minor leagues we have very limited options to replace Layne. Three of our triple A lefty options are on the 7 day DL. This is an obvious area that the Yankees will need help as the season progresses. Who out their might be a target of Cashman's to replace Layne? Cashman will be looking for a lefty that has a expiring contract or the potential to be so.
Mike Minor has been a revelation in Kansas City. The Royals took a chance on the former starter, this past off season and he has done well. Minor currently has a 2.25 ERA, 1.2 WAR, struck out 33 in 32 innings and has a WHIP of 1.000. Mike is under a 2 yr contract with a mutual option for 2018.
Brad Hand has emerged as San Diego's top trade asset. He is having another solid season out of the pen Brad has a 3.12 ERA, .7 WAR, struck out 46 in 34.2 innings and a WHIP of 1.067. His contract expires in 2017.
Tony Watson has struggled in 2017. He was just removed from Pittsburg's closer role. He has a proven track record over the past few years and is in need of a change of scenery. Tony has a 4.28 ERA, .1 WAR, struck out 20 in 27 innings and has a 1.463 WHIP. These are very down numbers compared to his past performances. For example, he has a career ERA of 2.68 and a 1.068 WHIP. This is his walk year.
Jerry Blevins has been a very solid lefty out of the pen for the Mets he has a 2.01 ERA, .9 WAR, struck out 33 in 21 innings and a 1.030 WHIP. Jerry has a 2 year contract with a team option for 2018.
