The Yankees Trade Deadline Keys to Success

The Yankees should not close the door on selling some expiring assets, despite their recent success, however, why not do a little bit of both-- restocking the system while continuing to go for it?

Selling

Aroldis Chapman and Carlos Beltran represent trade pieces that they could sell high on as rentals and probably get a good bit back.

  • Chapman can get the Yankees a young starter, a decent offensive prospect and a high upside lotto ticket.
  • Beltran can get 2 legitimate B level prospects
Justification for Buying

The Yankees still have CC Sabathia, Andrew Miller, Mashahiro Tanaka, Dellin Betances, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellisbury, Brett Gardner, Starlin Castro, Kirby Yates, Ronald Torreyes and Austin Romine all putting up decent numbers and remain under team control.

I believe that trading Miller in the offseason would be the best idea to enable the Yankees to continue to go for it, while attaining more leverage casting the net to a wider variety of teams enabling a bigger bidding war for his services.

How to enact this plan

This means that all the Yanks would need to do to compete would be to add a corner infield bat and probably a starter or two.

First trade suggestion is the Dodgers. The Dodgers are in the middle of a lackluster NL West and the bullpen has been a major issue. Packaging Chapman and Ivan Nova into a deal with LA could get a legitimate package of:

  • Trayce Thompson- He can move right into the outfield alongside Ellisbury and Gardner forcing Hicks to the Bench
  • Jharel Cotton- He can enter right into the rotation as soon as possible
  • Grant Holmes- Currently ranks as the Dodgers #3 prospect and could act as a legitimate top of the line starter a few years from now.
  • Jonah Mieses- Currently a HiA prospect, ranks 27th in the Dodger's system and is a lottery ticket.

The Second trade, however is the one that can help the Yankees right now. In Pittsburgh, there is a player who is hitting .280, but is having his playing time limited due to the presence of Jung-Ho Kang. He has just $2,250,000 left on his contract and he can play first and third spelling not just Chase Headley, but Mark Texiera as well representing a solid fill in for the remainder of the season. His name is David Freese. All it would take to get done is:

  • ONE OF: James Pazos and Nick Goody- The Pirates have a need for young bullpen arms, as their bullpen has been atrocious thus far this season and both of these guys fill that need.
  • A Minor League Lottery Ticket- I'm thinking Travis Hissong- he's a 24 year old class HiA reliever who was a undrafted free agent. He has pitched very well this season in HiA this year however projects as a middle reliever in the future.

So here's the Yanks line-up on August 2nd

C.) Brian McCann

1B.) David Freese

2B.) Starlin Castro

SS.) Didi Gregorious

3B.) Ronald Torreyes

LF.) Brett Gardner

CF.) Jacoby Ellisbury

RF.) Trayce Thompson

DH.) A-Rod

BN.) Austin Romine, Chase Headley, Mark Texiera, Dustin Ackley

SP.) Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Jharel Cotton, Nate Eovaldi, Luis Severino

BP.) Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, Kirby Yates, Chasen Shreve, the not traded Pazos/Goody, Luis Cessa, Michael Pineda

Oh, and just so you all know- I didn't forget about a Beltran trade- I just don't know much about the outfield market for this trade deadline, however, he is a productive veteran rental with power and leadership ability, so I'm assuming the Yankees can get at least two decent prospects for him regardless.

So in conclusion-

1.) Chapman and Nova for Cotton, Holmes, Meises and Thompson

2.) Freese for (Goody/Pazos) and Hissong

Does it work? Do you take them?
