The NBA draft just concluded. I enjoy watching this one the most of all the drafts (NBA, MLB & NFL). When one looks at the big three drafts we see similarities, yet differences. Baseball stands out to be the longest and have less immediate impact of the other two. Baseball free agency has created the need for a supplemental first round draft picks. But, is this truly fair to the team that is waiting to start the second round? There needs to be some changes made to MLB's draft and free agency.
First off I strongly believe, where you finish is where you draft. No exceptions and no trades. Meaning that where a team falls in the respective standings is where they pick. No team should every loose their first round position in the draft. Losing that spot is just wrong. I truly believe that a first round pick allows for the top teams to continue that legacy or even a dynasty. Now is that really that bad of a thing? Those lower finishing teams still are given first chance at a budding superstar. This of course means that a team is stuck with their selection for at least one full calendar year. That flat out eliminates those picks for another team in a trade situation. That gives teams time to evaluate what they got in a pick.
Supplemental round is actually a second round, let's be honest. I get the need for a team to be given a draft pick for compensation of loosing a top player. I also believe the second round is where a signing team should start loosing it's draft picks, then the third etc. till all required supplemental compensation is exhausted. This year illustrated the need for a change. Not fair to the player (free agent), to be extremely punished for not accepting that so called qualifying offer. To me this was a win win for ownership. What I think is right is for a team to be compensated in relationship to where they finished the previous season. I believe the order of the draft, till the end, should be based upon a team's performance the prior year. What I feel is a fair system would be if a team losses a top player, then they should get the next pick after their selection in the second round. If any team loses a couple or more top players then it should be compensated in the second round. Therefore their additional pics should come immediately after there second round first pick. For example Round 2 first pick, next is 1A, 1B, etc. one right after the other. Till they have exhausted all additional picks acquired because of free agency. This is far more fair then placing a team, that finish in the upper standings over a team that finished lower in the standings to start the second round.
These simple changes will help the game overall. I also think in the end will create a more parity in the league. Will put more pressure on teams to develop home grown talent. Top finishing team will have to think long and hard about putting a top free agent on a qualifying offer. This will allow teams, specially with a poor finish, more willing to spend on free agency and not be punished severely for doing so.
This current system needs revamped, that is for sure. Got any ideas on how it can be improved I for one would love to hear them.
