Pitching makes all the difference.
Yankee run differential as of today is ZERO.
And yet, they are in first place, one game behind the A's for the best record in the league.
Closer, first baseman, shortstop, titular second baseman and backup catcher have all missed time already. Doesn't matter.
If you have legit starters, you have almost everything you need.
Cubs threw two decent games at us yesterday, but you can't argue with zero runs allowed. Pineda and Tanaka have panned out, the others should be serviceable, the pen and its cast of inexperienced unknowns has been lights out, and Robertson will return. Meanwhile, two of the main threats in the East are having serious problems: Rays are now down Moore, Cobb AND Hellickson, and Boston's seen injuries to Pedroia, Uehara and maybe Napoli. Suddenly the Yankees look to be maybe not in the driver's seat but certainly in a position to drive.
