It looks more and more like Brett Gardner is going to be traded. He should get a least a top prospect @ SS or 2B or 3B. It is possible that Brett could net a #3 starter. Hard to imagine that any team would give up their starting short stop or third basemen for Gardner. Infield defense is a must in this game, specially up the middle. As far as top infield prospects go, the Cubs and Indians seem to be growing infielders. Looks like a platoon situation at 3B or the Captain offers to finish up his career at third. That would open a spot for a trade candidate or free agent Stephen Drew to play short in the Bronx. Brian Cashman will figure out what works.
If Brett is traded, I would assume Alfonso Soriano becomes the every day left fielder. That swings open the door for Kendrys Morales to become a Yankees and man the DH position in the Bombers line up. . No doubt he is a middle of the order bat and a back-up option in the field. He can play first base and some outfield. He will cost a draft pick but, his bat is worth a third rounder. Most feel that he will be lucky to get a 3 year $30 million dollar deal. Not a bad investment, when you look at his production in 2013 and his past offensive stats. He is a switch hitter that definitely would give some flexibility at first or in the outfield. He has performed on the big stage while a member of the Cuban Nationals. He hit two homers (a grand slam and a game winner) to seal a world championship for Cuba in the last two games of that championship season.
Seems like a no brainer to add Kendrys's power to the lineup. Best news is Morales might accept a one or two year contract, to build up market value. If for no other reason, he is a solid backup plan if Mark Teixeira is not ready to go.
