I was in attendance for Mariano Rivera's final home game last night, and it was absolutely amazing. The moment when Andy and Derek came out was the most memorable in game moment of an otherwise lackluster 2013 season. Watching Mariano weep on the shoulders of his long time teammates was something that I will never forget.
HOWEVER, this day showed me how terrible Yankee fans can be. On the subway ride, I was discussing the future of the Yankees with my friend. I said we should consider extending Granderson a qualifying offer, when a random Yankee fan jumped in, and asked "Why would they do that?" The conversation went something like this.
Me: Granderson is arguably the best outfielder we have. The Yankees should definitely try to resign him.
Random Fan: They have Gardner, Soriano, Ichiro, and Wells locked up for 2014 so they do not need him.
Me: Yes, but Ichiro and Wells suck
Stupid Fan: Wells is bad, but Ichiro is better than Granderson.
Me: Are you f***ing kidding me?
Stupid Fan: Ichiro is hitting .260, Granderson has hit under .240 the last two seasons
Me: Ichiro's .260 comes attached with a sub 300 OBP, which is dreadful for a leadoff hitter. Granderson hit 40 homers twice in the last 3 years, and his stats this year are poor because of the two arm injuries.
Stupid human being: Ichiro has the MLB record in hits in a season
Me: Yea, in like 2004, which was 9 years ago.
Stupid human being: Ichiro's best season is better than any of Granderson's
Me: (Walks away extremely pissed off)
I refuse to ever use batting average again as a measure of a player's hitting ability.
