Royals: 1-0 vs Rays, 3-0 vs Twins, 1-2 vs Blue Jays, Yankees drop 1.5 games
Though they lost costly games in Toronto and had a disaster finish to today’s game in Baltimore, the Yankees still gained ground in the Wild Card chase thanks to horrible weeks for Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Both teams only managed a single victory. It almost didn't go that way. The Rays lost three one -run-games and the Braves swept the Indians despite Indian pitching only giving up 8 runs.
The A’s excellent week against the Tigers and Rays puts them in a great position to win the West Division. They play Texas six more times plus they play their 20 remaining games against teams out of contention. The Rangers play the Rays, Pirates and Royals in September so protecting their one game lead will be difficult.
For Tampa Bay, their schedule is easier than the Yankees, mostly because they only have three remaining games against the Red Sox. Only the Indians and Tigers have easier remaining schedules.
Red Sox: 2-1 vs Orioles, 3-0 vs White Sox, Yankees drop 2 games
The Red Sox are playing great baseball right now, especially with their pitching. Unless the Yankees sweep the Sox this week, the Red Sox look poised to run away with the division. Soon it might not even need an update.
