I am not familiar with the typical suspensions handed out to pitchers, however I find that starting pitcher's should be suspended by amount of games to be started, rather than regular games.
Ryan Dempster was not scheduled to play again until Saturday, now facing his 5 game suspension, that will move to Tuesday. On top of that, he is being suspended with pay. Five games for a starting pitcher barely affects the amount of playing time he gets.
While I understand it may be difficult to measure how many games a pitcher starts, by rule of thumb it's one out of five. Therefore, Dempster's suspension is only one game. Alex Rodriguez may not be everyone's favorite player, and many may despise him, however pitcher's shouldn't set out to have a vendetta against him. A baseball, at 92mph, is not merely a ball, it is a projectile. It is a projectile with the ability to cause great bodily harm, and pitchers should not abuse the power entrusted to them. Dempster's suspension should have been of at least 10 games.
As a side note: Red Sox fans should be ashamed of themselves. You do not cheer a Hit By Pitch, it is disgusting to do so.
