Yankees rehab results: Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Michael Pineda

USA TODAY Sports

In his first game since re-breaking his surgically repaired ankle in spring training, Derek Jeter went 0-2 and worked a five-pitch walk in his first plate appearance in a game with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The Yankees shortstop played five innings in the field and only got one opportunity on defense that he completed the play on. Jeter was only scheduled to play five innings tonight, so this went exactly as planned. Jeter will DH for the RailRiders tomorrow.

Fellow rehabbing Yankee Michael Pineda started the game for the RailRiders, hit 93 mph in the first inning, and pitched five innings. He gave up two runs after a wild first inning in which he walked two, tossed a wild pitch, and gave up a bloop hit to right field. Pineda threw 78 pitches, 56 of them for strikes, and struck out eight Lehigh Valley batters. The 30-day rehab clock will run out before Pineda makes his next start, so the Yankees will now have to make the decision on whether he will be officially optioned to Triple-A or will join the big league club in New York. If the Yankees keep Pineda in the minors for 20 days, they will gain an extra year of team control, which they will likely choose to do with no pressing need in the rotation right now and having missed out on a year of Pineda because of his injury.

The rain in Florida finally subsided long enough for the Tampa Yankees and Alex Rodriguez to get a game in. A-Rod played six innings in the field before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh. In two at-bats, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and picked up a single, his first in his three rehab games.
