Yankees Prospect Interview: Nestor Cortes

USA TODAY Sports

Nestor Cortes is a left-handed pitcher drafted in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Hialeah High School in Florida. He agreed to a deal on the last day of the signing period and has yet to be assigned to a specific level. He was kind enough to answer a few questions about being drafted and his professional career.

How was it getting drafted by the Yankees? Were you expecting this or was it a complete surprise?

Getting drafted by the Yankees is basically everybody's childhood dream, I was fortunate enough to live it. Definitely wasn't expecting this.

You went down to Tampa to work out for the team, can you tell us how that went? What was the team looking for and how did you prepare?

I always prepare for any situation, I went the last day of signing and i threw a simulated game, got work in, and they were interested

What would you say is the strongest part of your game?

Strongest part of my game is my mental stage. I don't let anything rattle me up. I work in and out of the plate, basically changing eye level.

What are you looking to improve on in your first season of pro ball?

I need improvement, no question, but I'm willing to sacrifice time to be at the top of my game. I'm gonna work on commanding the strike zone.

What are you doing now after signing and before being assigned? Are you at the Tampa complex?

I am at the Tampa complex. Working hard day in and day out. Already met the staff, great people that are willing to help me get to where I wanna be.

What is your goal for the 2013 season?

My goal is to impress the staff with my stuff and my competitiveness. Doing what i got to do to keep moving foward

He will likely be assigned to one of the Gulf Coast League teams, but until then you can follow him @Cortes_1210
