2013 MLB Draft Results: Yankees select SS Tyler Wade 134th overall

USA TODAY Sports

It took them until the fourth round, but the Yankees finally took a shortstop in the 2013 MLB Draft with Tyler Wade, a 6'1" 180 pound senior out of Murrieta Valley High School in California. Wade has a commitment to play at San Diego State University, but the Yankees will have to try to tempt him away from school with a nice signing bonus.

Whoever takes over as the next Yankees' shortstop will have impossibly big shoes to fill, and there is almost a zero percent chance that they will hit as remotely well as we've been accustomed to with Derek Jeter. That being said, Tyler Wade is a fairly good left-handed hitter with a line-drive swing that profiles as a top-of-the-order hitter. Wade doesn't have a ton of power to speak of right now, but he is a good defender with a strong arm, and good speed. All things considered, you gladly take that from a shortstop, especially one coming out of high school with room to develop.

Wade was ranked 169 in the draft by Baseball America, and was on the Rawlings All-Americans and All-Regions California teams in 2013. There is some speculation that he may end up moving to third base eventually, once he fills out a little more, but most scouts are convinced he can remain at shortstop. Wade has the arm strength to play either position on the left side of the infield, and his gap power could eventually progress a little, but he's not likely to ever be a home run hitter.

The Yankees have nothing promising at shortstop in their system, and a high school bat doesn't put them a ton closer to filling that gap. Hopefully Wade develops into a shortstop of the future type player, but he's likely still years away from being a major player on the big league team. Still, it was a position they needed to try and fill, and they managed to do that fairly early on in the draft.
