When I read that Michael Pineda had to leave a rehab start last week because he broke a fingernail, I think to myself what were the Yankees thinking taking him over a top left handed pitcher like Francisco Liriano ?
They could have picked up Liriano as a free agent in the off season for half the price of Kuroda or Suzuki or even Pettitte. Liriano (only 29 years old) signed with the Pirates (who arguably now have a better team than the yanks this year) and has started 5 games - line is
3 Wins, 2 Losses
2.172 ERA and a 1.209 WHIP
29 Innings pitched / 39 Strikeouts and only 9 Walks
Compare this to the Lefty they did select (Andy Pettitte) and dont get me wrong - I love Andy - but his age and price mean I prefer Liriano for this year and the future.
Pettitte over 8 games is
4 Wings and 3 Losses
49 Innings Pitched and 39 StrikeOuts
ERA 3.83 and WHIP of 1.31
Yankees will be desperate for a solid Left Handed pitcher next year. I hope this find one.
