Yankees prospect promotions: JR Murphy to Triple-A, Corey Black to Double-A

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

This is around the time MLB teams start promoting their prospects, so it's no surprise that the Yankees have started doing that now. JR Murphy has been called up to Triple-A and Corey Black has been bumped up to Double-A.

Black pitched to a 4.08 ERA with a 10.2 K/9 and a 4.6 BB/9 in 57.1 innings at High-A Tampa and will join Trenton's rotation, which is already made up of Zach Nuding, Nik Turley, Jose Ramirez, Mikey O'Brien, and Matt Tracy.

JR Murphy's promotion has caused a few more roster shakeups and after hitting .268/.352/.421 at Double-A this season, he has earned a spot in Triple-A. Murphy has essentially traded places with Jeff Farnham, who has been demoted to Double-A, and will share time with Bobby Wilson. He could probably be an improvement over Austin Romine's .157/.180/.337 this season.

The biggest question now becomes what happens when Francisco Cervelli comes back later this month? Cervelli would be the third catcher on the active roster, so they'll need to get rid of one of them. Romine could simply be optioned back down and Wilson could be shot out of a cannon. But would Murphy, a more promising prospect at this point, get enough time behind the plate if Romine is also there? What if Chris Stewart was launched into the sun instead? Would anyone really miss him? If I was in charge I would release Stewart, send down Romine and call up Murphy to go with a Cervelli/Murphy catching tandem.
