Tonight's @yankees lineup (6pm on YES): Gardner 8, Youkilis DH, Cano 4, Teixeira 3, Wells 7, Nix 6, Adams 5, Ichiro 9, Stewart 2, Sabathia— YES Network (@YESNetwork) May 31, 2013
Hey, this almost looks respectable! Hopefully Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis brought their bats back from the Disabled List, because this offense desperately needs it. Jayson Nix and Lyle Overbay have found success in their careers against tonight's starter Jon Lester. Nix is 7-23 with three homers and Overbay is 9-25 with two homers off the lefty. Over 48 plate appearances, Lester has given Vernon Wells fits, holding him to six hits for his career. Wells has been really slumping lately, and this doesn't seem like the pitcher for him to magically turn things around against. Maybe miracles can happen.
To make room on the roster for Teixeira and Youkilis, Vidal Nuno and Ivan Nova were sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. With Andy Pettitte set to return on Monday and Nuno being unavailable for the next few days after pitching last night, that move was pretty expected. Sending Nova down after he'd been successful in his few relief attempts so far seemed less likely of an option. The Yankees were carrying a number of pitchers, so losing their second longman for the time being probably won't matter too much. Maybe Nova can work on finding success in the RailRiders' rotation that will allow him to take his rotation spot back from David Phelps.
