Keith Law on prospects: Gary Sanchez and mock draft 2.0

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Keith Law has updated his list of top 25 prospects in MLB (subscription required) and one Yankee prospect has moved up the list. Gary Sanchez was ranked 18th overall in Law's preseason list, but has moved up two spots to 16th thanks to his strong showing this season. Law believes that he still needs to improve behind the plate, but he has shown that he has the athleticism to improve and, as a catcher, will have the bat of an MVP-type hitter. Right now, Sanchez is hitting .278/.344/.487 with 9 home runs in High-A Tampa.

Other Yankees who placed on Law's preseason top 100 prospect list (subscription required) were Mason Williams (35), Tyler Austin (52), Slade Heathcott (57). He also included Jose Ramirez in a list of 10 prospects (subscription required) who just missed the top 100. None of these prospects got off to a particularly good start to the season, but they are starting to come around. Williams is now hitting .227/.319/.314 with six stolen bases, Austin has an impressive .266/.368/.411 line with five home runs, but Heathcott is only hitting .231/.286/.361 with four home runs. Jose Ramirez currently has a 2.59 ERA and a 4.06 FIP in 31.1 innings.

In Law's second mock draft (subscription required) he has the Yankees drafting Texas HS outfielder Billy McKinney, Notre Dame third baseman Eric Jagielo, and Tennessee HS right-hander Kyle Serrano. The Yankees have been linked to Jagielo before, but this is the first time that the Yankees are predicted to draft McKinney or Serrano.

Sports Illustrated also has another mock draft up where the Yankees take Indiana State lefty Sean Manaea, Stanford outfielder Austin Wilson, and Venderbilt lefty Kevin Ziomek. Manaea was initially pegged as a top-of-the-first-round pick, but injuries to his hip and shoulder tightness will likely cause him to drop. If the Andrew Brackman pick is any indication, the Yankees are probably drooling all over themselves for a top flight injured lefty.
