New York Yankees 2013 draft picks

No pressure, man - Brad Penner-US PRESSWIRE

The 2013 First Year Player Draft is a little over a month away, as it starts on June 6th and continues until June 8th. This year the Yankees are looking to have a strong draft with their three draft picks in the top 33. They have the 26th pick overall, which is the second to last pick of the first round. They also have two compensation picks in the first comp round; #32, coming from the Cleveland Indians for signing Nick Swisher and #33, coming from the Washington Nationals for signing Rafael Soriano. They also have the 66th and 103rd overall picks to take them through the first three rounds.

While the Yankees typically draft low due to their perennially good records, this year no other team has more picks in the first 33 than the Yankees. If you can't draft high, draft often. They will have several chances to come away with some quality amateur talent.

The Yankees have had, at best, moderate success in the first round since 2007. They have drafted Andrew Brackman, Gerrit Cole (did not sign), Slade Heathcott, Cito Culver, Dante Bichette Jr., and last year's Ty Hensley. All these picks, besides Heathcott have proved to be duds and Hensley recently had hip surgery.

They have been more successful in subsequent rounds, having drafted Austin Romine, David Adams, JR Murphy, Adam Warren, Angelo Gumbs, and Peter O'Brien within the first three rounds during the same span. Hopefully, we'll have some new Baby Bombers to follow as they try to become big stars or even just competent major league players.

We'll have coverage in the days leading up to and during the draft and any interesting information we find will be brought to your attention.
