Remember when Cody Eppley was on the Yankees and Joe Girardi put him in every game? He had a 3.33 ERA and a 3.66 FIP in 59 games, but in 2013 he miraculously made the bullpen out of spring training, gave up four runs in 1.2 innings and was promptly sent down to Triple-A.
After Joba Chamberlain was put on the disabled list in April, Eppley was designated for assignment to make room for Preston Claiborne. Now, according to Donnie Collins, beat writer for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders:
In all reality, Eppley might be the worst reliever in the International League this season. ERA over 6.6, WHIP at 2.15.— Donnie Collins (@RailRidersTT) May 29, 2013
He apparently can't pitch to lefties, putting up a 6.75 BB/9 and a 4.64 FIP against them in his career. He is what baseball scientists call a ROOGY, a Righty One Out GuY, but those don't really exist, they're just right-handed pitchers who can't get lefties out. They're considered terribly flawed pitchers with no place in the majors, but LOOGYs are valuable.
Boone Logan is a LOOGY and he was tied for the most appearances in MLB (80) in 2012. He has a 5.21 FIP against righties for his career, yet he's back-of-the-bullpen material and Eppley is middle relief cannon fodder. Maybe it's the 4.16 FIP against right-handers that got him there. Maybe Every Day Eppley was just Everyday Eppley all this time and Girardi got confused.
