Joba Chamberlain has returned to the Yankees for tonight's game and the newly added David Huff has been designated for assignment to make room for him on the 25-man roster. The Yankees are still carrying eight relievers, so expect one of them to be cut to make room for Mark Teixeira or Kevin Youkilis when they are supposed to return later in the week.
It's easy to see that the likely player to be sent down could be Ivan Nova, who has only appeared in one inning of relief since returning from the DL. He was unimpressive out of the bullpen when he gave up two hits and a walk, but still managed to collect two strikeouts against the Rays. Preston Claiborne could also be sent down because he's the only prospect out of the bunch, but he's been great with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings. If the Yankees want to be really mean they could send down Adam Warren and let Nova be the sole longman out of the pen. Warren has been great in that role (1.14 ERA in 23.2 innings), but Nova is the veteran.
David Huff ends his Yankees career (maybe) after one inning against the Rays. He gave up one run on one hit and two walks, looking like the garbage bin pickup he was. My biggest concern over the return of Joba was the likely send down of Preston Claiborne, since he did replace him on the roster in the first place. Chamberlain hasn't been as good as the Yankees had hoped for, putting up a 3.86 ERA in just 9.1 innings. Hopefully he can improve and be a reliable part of the back end of the bullpen.
