The day that we have all been waiting for has finally arrived: Ben Francisco has been DFA'd to make room for the recently acquired David Huff. The left-handed pitcher was already on the 40-man roster after Francisco Rondon was also designated for assignment, but this move will get him onto the 25-man roster.
It's curious that they made this move after already dumping Rondon because now they have a 40-man roster spot open for someone. I expected the move to replace Francisco would be another outfielder, but apparently we need another pitcher. Perhaps the open spot on the 40 will go to Thomas Neal, who is currently batting .500/.600/.500 in the last 10 games at Triple-A.
As a reminder, Huff has a career 5.40 ERA, 4.88 FIP and 5.06 K/9 with the Cleveland Indians with a 5.20 FIP against lefties. I'm not sure what he offers the team that's not already here, but I'm sure people will hate him less now that he has dethroned Francisco.
There is also talk that, with Mark Teixeira nearing a return, Lyle Overbay will be tried out in right field. He has never played the outfield at the major league level in his career, but the Yankees don't want to give up his bat or have to rely on Ichiro Suzuki. If only they had someone raking in the minors right now.
